There is an office party coming up soon, and i've decided to rent some good fast lenses to take nice pics, since the party will be held in the evening / night.

So my choices are

  1. Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L USM and
  2. Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L II USM or
  3. Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L USM

and a zoom lens

  1. Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM or
  2. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM

I'm kinda decided to get the 35mm prime, dunno if I should get the 50 or the 85. My worry is that 85mm will be a tad too long, but it produces better images and is a faster lens. I dont want to use any flash whatsoever, since the last party i was using flash non stop and all the chicks started made weird faces just after :P

Have to decide within tomorrow to reserve the lens, so please help me decide :D

PS: Couldnt post the same in LensWorth as something's happened to my account :ashamed: can any mod in LensWorth look into this? Dropped a request this afternoon to reset the password from the Contact Us link.

Well I have very limited knowledge of Canon lenses so I cant comment on sharpness. But for an indoor party, 35mm is the most useful range. 85mm is mainly for portraits so you wont really find too much use for it. So based purely on the range, I say go for the 35mm f1.4.

The Zoom lens wont be fast enough indoors without flash usage.

Which body are you using these with these lenses? If you're using a 1.6 crop, the 85mm is basically useless...

he has 450D
85 L has very good reviews, but dunno it extends more on a crop camera
but y would u buy an L just for one party??

i would say u go for 17-55 2.8 and 580 EX, i know u dont want a flash but u can bounce it off from the ceiling..

its a forum for canon gear, u might get good replies there!

Talking about primes...

though 85mm is best among all, but it is a portrait lens...
If U want to grab few good portraits in the party it will be the best one....

But I guess ur priority will be getting group shots..
So better to ponder upon 35mm L.. It will act as a normal lens in Crop body...

About zooms...

I think 17-55mm f/2.8 IS will be better option coz it gives wide angle of ~26mm in a crop body....
Plus IS will help in gaining 2-3 stops more...
Moreover I dont think not using a flash will be a smarter choice...
A flash is must in the indoor shots....

Dont forget that using fast lens like f/1.4 to get enough light do also results in less DOF

By the way, did U used any flashgun or u were using inbuilt flash in last party...
Most probably the pics washed out due to overexposure by the flash....
Diffusing flash is must in indoors...

Better to get a flashgun if U had used inbuilt flash...
And diffuse it using bouncing back by ceiling or making some DIY diffusers like this...

Addition-

If U decides to use a flashgun [with diffuser] better to go for 17-55mm f/2.8 IS [edited... wrote L instead of IS]....

Dont forget to do some practice with the diffuser before U use it in field...

If U had decided not to use flash in any cost 35mm will be better option...

^^ Sunny said no flash ! So he needs a fast lens. Plus IS will be good only for if its a very boring party with everybody sitting down. If people are dancing IS is pretty much useless. :(

Exactly :P

I'm pretty fixated to get the 35mm f/1.4, was wondering if I should try the 85 out, since thats probably the best portrait lens available and the fastest!

The 24-70 / 85 are too long on a 450D.

I'd suggest a combo of the 50 1.2 and 16-35 2.8L

Use the 50mm for portraits and 16-35 as a walkaround.
