My friends laptop recently developed a problem and I took it to service center. They said the problem is with the nVidia graphics (the heating issue, which was popular sometime back) and that the complete motherboard needs to be replaced. They quoted around 11k for the repair. Since my friend was not ready to pay this much, I got in touch with a chip level servicing guy (suggested by the laptop service center person). The chip level service guy said he will charge around 4.5k for the repair. He also offered 3 months warranty.

How does he source the replacement graphics chip? I believe it won't be available in retail. Also, anybody here has experience in getting this kind of servicing done for their laptops/PCs?

The thing regarding chip level repair is that there are very few guys who know how to do it well.all the service center guys in any company probably just replace the motherboard if in warranty or charge an exotic amount to replace it because you have no choice.usually in every city there is one or two guys who really know how to do this stuff and are living in a corner shop somewhere and do not come in contact with customers directly.all the other shops though, send motherboard jobs to these guys and charge you a little extra.i got my asus motherboard repaired for 2.5k two years ago.i had to just hand it to the shopkeeper and he sent it somewhere and charged me the money! i had another pc with a problem and stumbled on such a corner shop by dogged pursuit!!!!!! the guy had 25 guys waiting in line for him, like a government hospital!!!!!!! he also charged 250 bucks just for seeing your pc-- more than my doctor!!!!!!! Seriously he was in demand and had a lot of jobs to keep him busy!!!!!!! so my suggestion is find such a guy in your city ,pay him whatever he asks to find what the problem is and then decide whether its worth the repair!!!!!!!!!!!! hope i was helpful.....:)

Last year my friend also got his motherboard repaired. He had a faulty 8600M GT. Guy charged 3.5K but his laptop is working fine till now.

share the outcome of your experience whether positive or negative.it will definitely help others seeking motherboard repairs and make the forums more practical and helpful.
