Quick question about The Witcher 2

I've been curious about this game for sometime now and almost everything I read about it seems positive. It's on sale in the Steam Store for about 400 bucks so I'm wondering whether to pick it up. However, I have a question about its performance.

My rig is an i5 2500, with an HD 6870 and 8 gigs of RAM. What kind of framerates can I expect at 1080p resolution? There's nothing that throws me off more than low FPS, so if it's gonna perform poorly, I won't buy it no matter how good the game is.

Thanks.

It will run fine on high settings without ubersampling for you.
I have the same system configuration except graphic card(geforce 560GTX)

Thanks for the info. What framerates do you get? I could be wrong but I think your graphics card is better than mine.

Some people are okay with 25-30 fps in single player games but I find it really annoying to play like that :(

On steam for 400 bucks? Is this the enhanced edition? Even if it isn't, get the game right away. It should perform decently provided you toggle around with a few settings. I have a 560Ti and that was coupled with a much weaker processor and RAM than yours (E8400 and 2GB memory) and it played reasonably well, save for a few places were the frame rates literally dipped to single digits. It's a demanding game and you'll probably have to sacrifice a few details to get playable frame rates.

ALPHA17 can vouch for it. I'm sure even he was able to manage to complete it on his configuration, which I think was pretty close to yours (?). Bottom line; you don't want to miss this game.

Sadly, my stupid debit card lets me buy things only from Indian websites or through Moneybookers which Steam supports.
@Ethan_Hunt, yes the Enhanced Edition is on sale right now for 7.49 USD which is Rs. 410 according to Google.

Have you tried buying directly from GOG.com?

You can also consider Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition which is currently on sale at GOG for just $2.49.

Great game with loads of content and should run maxed out on your rig.

I have that game but really hated the fighting mechanics. Is it the same with The Witcher 2?

No, but I've had bad experiences with a few international websites where my money was debited from my account, but never reached the seller. When I called up the bank to check, they simply said they don't support transactions outside India.

Same here. I so want to play the first game, but the gameplay mechanics put me off completely, especially coming from Witcher 2's amazing combat mechanics. But from the looks of it, The Witcher seemed to have a more dark and brooding atmosphere, which is exactly what I like. Bah, hope they re-master it someday. :(

This is what I'm worried about. My knee-jerk reaction to situations like this is to simply close the game and delete it from my computer :P

I have Witcher 2 but I have never installed it because I'm aware my current PC wont be able to handle it with good framerate.

The game play has been reportedly changed in some ways according to reviews. Have a look at this thread as it will give you a good comparison between the two from players who have played both -

Trust me, I wouldn't be here pushing you to play it, if it wasn't that epic. But it is, so you have to find a way to make it work. At that price point, it's a steal. I'm pretty sure it will work well, if you tone down a few settings. There are plenty of guides over the Internet which denote what each visual feature does and if it can be turned down/off without sacrificing a lot.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for chipping in a with the praise @Ethan_Hunt Sire.

Get any version of the game and you are entitled to an upgrade to the Enhanced Edition + all DLC's released for free.

Well either way you slice it both the games are very well done from their respective eras and in this age of Mass Effect and Dragon Age II hand-holding this is a man's RPG. May not make the same mark to old timers like Planescape Torment but overall a very under-rated gem in the rough this one.

Okay, I'm sold :) Buying it now.

You will get ~30 -->45 fps depending on the graphics fidelities you choose. Honestly chugging at that frame-rate is good enough for this game, it has certain settings which will put Crysis to shame. Ãœber-Sampling for example can get even the mightiest of cards like the GTX680 and HD7970 EyeFinity edition to their knees.

I have been a Witcher acolyte since the purchasing the first game (quite by accident) and I would recommend that you keep a look out for these underdogs (CD PROJECKT RED), they might not be the guys with the largest pockets but they have the attitude to pull off games of magnificent scale at the drop of a hat.

Try these settings for now --

Reduce the resolution to 1920 x1080
Texture downscaling -- Low
Texture Size -- High
Shadow Quality -- High (Medium)
Number of Shadowed Lights -- High
LOD Distance -- Far (OR Normal and play with the setting to see if it hits your performance)
Bloom -- Enabled
Light Shafts -- Enable (OR Disable this and see if it hits your performance)
Anti-Aliasing -- Disabled
Blur Effects -- Enable (OR Disable this and see if it hits your performance)
Depth of Field (Gameplay) -- Disabled
Depth of Field (Cut-scene) -- Enabled
Cinematic Depth of Field -- Enabled
Vignette -- Enabled
Wet Surfaces Rain Effect -- Enabled (OR Disable this and check for performance penalty)
SSAO -- Disabled
Motion Blur -- Enabled (Disable this if performance gets choppy)
Dangling Objects Limit -- Enabled
Ubersampling -- Disabled
Vertical Sync -- Disabled
Decals -- Medium Spec (play around with this and see what results you get)

Hope this helps and wishing all on this thread a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year, Cheerio!

See you in Temeria soon Witcher and may your sword stay sharp.

Thanks, I'll give those a shot. Only 2% downloaded so far, so I'll get to play it only tomorrow. Steam servers take quite a beating during the sale I guess.
