Quick Question Regarding Digital Camera's

I am thinking about buying an Nikon 4MP camera but i am so confused by the naming conventions and the corresponding prices they retail it for...

What is the basic difference between a NIKON Coolpix 4100/4200/4500/4600/4800 and how are they priced... I can see some 4100's being priced higher than 4600's at bazee aka ebay.in...
 
You should look at the features of both the cameras.
The more MP the camera has, the higher resolution the pic can be clicked on and the higher the rez the bigger the printout can be taken without loss of quality.
The optical zoom is the thing to look for as it gives higher quality.
Digital zoom is like zooming in your image viewer and you know how it looks bad. so it realy doent matter what digital zoom it has. Its good only for the LCD of the camera.

There are lots of options that you can look for....
Red eye reduction comes with almost every camera now.... it is the red spots glowing in the eye of the person being photographed under flash.
Multifocus is the ability to focus on the object even when you are not keeping the object in the centre of the viewfinder. Certainly a good thing to have.

Most of the features are same in these and yet when you move up the numbering system there will be more features and higher price.
Since these are all economy cameras there is not much to compare but the build quality and small features packed are the things to look for. Some look snazzier than others. Like the 4500 looks cool.

Its better that you read the reviews on a website and compare them or get a digitalphotography magazine for prices and reviews

My suggestion: If you can afford a 5MP camera then go for it. who knows you might want to take poster printout of photos one day. For casual photgraphy though 4MP is enough.

As for the prices the retailers quote them really high.. you can get it much cheaper from proper markets and even cheaper from grey market. Almost 2/3rd the price of retail. My father owns 5 cameras a few lenses (500MM zoom) and a lot of filters and not to mention they came from a delhi market so reliability is not a issue.
 
Thanks for the info an... That was quite helpful... yes i can go ahead and buy a 5MP but i dont think i would ever be printing a Poster size photograph... Anyways thanks for the suggesstion... Some guy at Bazee is offering a Nikon 4600 for around 11.5K... Seems like a great buy... As your father own so many camers whats his take on the 4600 and what would he think of the price... Also whats the best place to buy a camera from Delhi... I would not mind a grey camera as long as it comes with all the stuff bundled and the manual(Very Important)...
 
Yes the grey cameras come with all the accessories of the original bundle and packaging. What good is a camera without a manual. :)

As for the opinion ill ask him when he is free. Though he knows the dealer of canon equipment only.

You do know that things sell at higher prices on baazee, the commision involved and all. Why dont you take a trip to a exclusive dealer.
 
actually Baazee, all said & done is good for one thing....
Before buyinh any gizmo, check the best price on Baazee, then go to the local market and try to bargain for a 15% lower quote
 
Could not agree with you more. its a good place to make up your mind and get the funds ready.
 
go for local market it will be easier now a days cameras do come with complete box packing in grey market.

mine is also a grey piece.

have a look at

and use their camera comparison feature you will be able to decide much easily.

i would recommend you a 5 mp camera now as prices have fallen much it may cost you around 15-16k.

if you need 4 mp try to look at canon powershot a85 / a80 good value for money and nice features.

I see you are in Noida - but here is a BIG time grey market supplier only of Digital cameras in Mumbai - Gaffar Bhai and Sons - Mumbai Phone No. 2261 6768 and 2261 8461. These guys are located at Manish Market. When I went there a while back they received a few phone calls from the Computer Dealers from Lamington Road enquiring about digital cameras. They specialise mostly in Nikon cameras.

But i would like to buy it here from Delhi cause of after sales support... I know its a grey piece but still the shopkeeper would help me if anything goes wrong... BTW i am thinking about picking up Poweshot A95... Have seen some good reviews on it and medpal also has one...
 
A canon powershot is any day better than the comparable cameras in photo quality. Simply superb. I can say that coz ive used the G3 and read the reviews of others.
 
Yeah, I reckon u go for Powershot A95! The best mid-range cam out there! :hap2:
May be a bit bulky, but then to gain something, you have to lose something!
 
I have an A95 as well. Not very bulk., IMO, and it's manual features are good to work with as well. JJMehta in Bombay have it for 16K, as well as the Powershot S50 for the same price.. 5MP, with manual contrast/sharpness controls, and RAW image ability as well. Flipside: It's movie modes are only 320*240 and 160*120, as opposed to teh 640*480 on the A95.Go for the S50, better camera IMO.
 
Ohhh! sorry spotted it later that you mentioned that its available for the same price but are you sure about it... I am going on tuesday to look for some here in Delhi... Any heads up which places to look out for the digi cams here in Delhi...
 
So finally i have narrowed down to four of these...

Nikon CP 5900
Canon PS A95
Canon PS S50
Canon PS C1 IS

Now i know that C1 IS is more of an enthusiaasts camera then a beginier camera but i have read some real good stuff about it. The S50 is more like A95 but more refiened. Dont have much info about CP 5900. All three are almost same price range except for C1 IS bing a little more expensive than the lot.

Now the question. I would be taking a lot of furniture photographa in which details are must. the camera would be used for more indoor activities and would be operated in low light at certain times(Parties and all). Size of the camera along with the weight is also an factor. As i look at it A95 is great except for the weight which would be there cause of four AA size batteries. Help me pick one now guys. Medpal, Techhead, Renegade, Icefusion,Blade,Cngn... All you guys with good digicam's knowledge please help me choose one. This is going to be my first digicam so help me choose wisely...
 
You yourself said that C1 is a bit costly then you said that S50 is better than A95 in features. Also it is lighter than A95 which is better for a camera.
You are not much of a enthusiastic photographer but it is always good to have one with features for future needs. No point buying a new camera when you need one with features. You might use it initially in total automatic mode but later wen get the feel you would like to experiment with manual features for better results.
Anyway in one line always go for the best you can buy, the one with more features.
So from my side it is S50
 
Thanks for replying renegade but as i also mentioned i would be needing it for indoor photography so which is a better option... Also which ones performs better at night with flash... Wanted some light on this part...
 
In digital cameras, indoor pics are always a problem..

A common rule of digicam is the lighter the camera, the more u lose out on pic quality, esp, in indoor pics...(due to smaller lens, poor flash, poor response time, shaking-since it's light wgt).

U need a good flash, so don't compromise on battery power..it is just common sense that 4 aa batteries will give u a better flash than 2 AA batteries..

If u opt for a light wgt camera, then i'll suggest u to buy a tripod also.

The advantage of a heavy bulky camera is that u can hold it more steadly. Ever wondered why all the pro cameras look like that. ;)

Ever wondered why all the pro photographers with pro cameras also have the tripods.
Well the camera should not be too heavy to strain the hands or too light to shake the picture.
As for indoor photography you can always get a separate flash coz the inbuilt ones are never strong. The no of batteries is not directly proportional to the intensity of flash. Please check the flash ratings too and also these canon cameras have five levels of flash intensity settings (confirm that the S50 has it too as I know that G3 had it). Also G3 had very good picture quality and it was light enough for comfort.
Unless you want to do photography in a 60 W bulb with normal flash settings... the inbuilt flash would do.
