Well as I had sold of my Buffalo 4 GB for the need of something bigger and better, so came the mission to find one in SP Road yesterday. I mainly had the plan to get the 4GB Corsair Voyager but the non-availability of the model made me to find an alternative as I needed the drive urgently from Monday.I have using some Transcend V10 flash drives in the past and they were quite fast compared to the V30 or even some SanDisk Kingston. So with a bit of apprehension when I saw that the 8GB Transcend V10 was just 1.6k...I just couldn't resist and bought it from Ankit Infotech

Introduction

What was once a tiny storage device to flaunt is now in the hands of almost every other PC user. Flash storage has changed the way we see and use portable storage. It is reasonably fast, very rugged (compared to hard disks), and is very small.On top of that prices are tumbling every month and even a 8GB drive like this is only 1.6k which was almost like 3k 2-3 months back

Looks

The JetFlash has a sliding USB connector. This convenient feature replaces a cap that can get lost or break. The connector slides into the body of the drive to keep it protected and clean.The ouside material though looks quite good...but the build quality is a bit suspect with cheap plastic. Also the sliding USB on the side might become loose over a period of time. These are the two concerns that I have since I always keep the flash drive in my purse and it has to withstand the stress of coins nd all :P

As of the weight its quite light at arnd 11 gm. A status Blue LED is there which blinks on activity. Overall I will say it looks quite good but the build quality could have been better. But you cant expect everything right :P

Additionally, the thumb drive comes with a lanyard for easy portability.

A Lanyard cable would have been very nice if it was bundled. Anyway one can buy a good qulaity one for arnd 25 bucks

Bundled Software

The JetFlash V10 comes with JetFlash elite software pack. The software includes a PC lock function, so your flash drive becomes the key to your computer, encryption and password security application, data backup function and more.

Detection & Performance

The drive was detected fine in quite a few machines w/o any issues and the performance was quite similar. Most importantly it gives almost same speeds in front USBs as well with extenders.

The benchmarks results are below:

HD Tach RW 3.0.1

700 MB Single File Copy(write)

Time Taken--- 72 sec
Speed --- 9.72 MB/s

700 MB Single File Copy(Read)

Time Taken --- 34 sec
Speed ---- 20.58 MB/s

Final Thoughts

Well Transcend flash drives are associated with slow speeds but the V10 series have never dissapointed me and here the V10 8GB continues the good tradition. In fact everything except the dreaded V30 series are quite good. TO summarize here are the pros and cons

Pros:

* Blazing flast ( I guess it beats the Flash voyager in write speeds)

* jet Flash Elite Software

* Excellent VFM.....can't think of anything better in market in terms of price per GB

* Looks good

Cons

* Iffy build quality

* The removable usb mechanism might get loose over a point of time...just an apprehension though

great drive and great price....will pick one for me soon :)

i dunno why they market as v10 :huh:
even v30 is slower than this

Good review. Two things going for this drive are

1) the retractable connector(I have found my Sandisk Cruzer to be a real boon esp when listening to music from my laptop on my way to work...no USB cap to hold in hand. I have two other regular USB sticks so I know the headache associated with having to take care while using it in the car and keep clutching the cap all the way to work.)

2) 4GB extra vs the Corsair Flash Voyager. So, don't have to upgrade for a longer time :).

nice mini review :)

the drive looks promising :D

you could have atleast cleaned your cabinet before taking the last pic :P

LOL i know that.....but archish was really pushing me to publish this :P....and I am very very lazy :rofl:

nice review. Had seen this pen drive yesterday but didn't ask for its price. I have a 1gig V10 pen drive which is ~1.5 years old. Pretty happy with it.

* The removable usb mechanism might get loose over a point of time...just an apprehension though

Yup that does happen. Eventually, you'l have to hold that white lock in place and then insert it into the USB port.

nice review! so it takes 1 minute and 12 secs to write a 700mb file to it which is decent :D

there are so many customer reviews in Amazon that say pathetic write speeds with it.. confusing!

LOL....those are from brain dead people :P....V10 series have always been fast....dig up TE to find up old posts regarding it

i resisted buying the same pendrive last week from prime at the same rate.. only coz of the poor build quality... i think that the sliding mechanism will become weak and damaged as time goes by....

is there any flash drive that supports anything other than fat 32 file system at times i need to shift big files

anyone...

Windows XP by default doen't allow for formatting a flash drive with NTFS file system. One way around is using the command prompt and format command. 2nd way is to choose the option in the flash drive device properties "Optimize for performance" instead of "Optimize for quick removal", that will allow it to format the drive in NTFS format using windows format utility

I guess any USB drive supports NTFS. What size of file are you talking about?

It supports but windows XP doesn't allow so. And max size of a file in FAT32 FS can be 2 GB

your right.. I read this month digit magazine. it had flash drive comparo and Transcend V10 came second place, after Voyager. in the high end, Ducati flash drive won the round.
