If you have been keeping up to date with the GPU world then you surely know these last few weeks have been pretty hectic, AMD launching its second generation DirectX 11 graphics card family while Nvidia seems to be set to do the same in just a couple of days, but things are going to become a lot more bizzare if we are going to believe some rumors that state AMD's HD 7000 graphics card series (code named Southern Islands) is set to launch in Q3 2011.

However, there may be some truth to these rumors, since one can pretty much assume that if Nvidia has 28nm chip samples, AMD most definitely has access to the same manufacturing technology, making the 28nm HD 7000 graphics card family possible.

GlobalFoundries is expected to take over parts of the AMD's 28nm manufacturing the coming year and may very well be in phase with TSMC when it comes to starting up the 28nm manufacturing, but right now it looks like Radeon HD 7000 is completely in the hands of the circuit makers. The design and the first products are expected to be rady for Q3 2011, but when the 28nm technology stands ready it will dictate the launch date.

There are no concrete details surrounding the Southern Islands architecture, but most likely we are dealing with a not too astonishing generation shift where AMD has already given its new VLIW4 architecture a spin with the Cayman GPU. This will continue with Radeon HD 7000 that will become an overall more efficient and performance optimized version. We also hope there will be some surprises, and a more recent launch date.

My prediction is that the 7950 will be 20% faster than the 6970 with 200W TDP and priced at $300. The 7970 will be 40% faster than 6970, 250W TDP and priced at $400.

Nothing can be said, but seeing that HD6970 didn't do that much to the HD5870 as HD5870 did to the HD4870(confusing, bear with me), I think the HD7970 will be a monster

These 7000 series would just be same architecture of 6000, but in 28mm...
So, not much new technical changes can be expected except higher clocks or less power draw..

seems everything is well with 28nm and HD7000 which taped out earlier than HD5000 2 years ago. Wow, I'm excited. This is like:

JUNE AND JULY 2011:

- Bulldozer

- Llano

- HD7000

Followed by AUGUST/SEPTEMBER:

- Bobcat 2(it taped out a moth ago, already, on 28nm, upto 4 cores, maybe 160 SPs graphics)
