Rail passenger fare hiked by 14.2 per cent

Personally, I will support railway ticket price hike on condition that they should provide better basic facilities, etc. At least, irctc website should serve tickets promptly, enough seats should be made available during peak season. States which pay more should get better facilities that trains going trough rlyway ministers' home town.

People suddenly went to support Modi when they foresaw the inevitable void created by drama queen AAP Kejriwal (it was partially public's fault to support such a feeble guy and his party). They forgot that history will repeat and no politician have a magic wand to solve their problems. Modi will need his time, he have good number of MPs supporters, now he have to perform hard - am sure he will find a way. So, expect more of these, money need to come from somewhere.

I found it more funny with that Hindi language issue. It was Guj. judge who declared Hindi is not 'national language' of India and people find it difficult to read Hindi in Guj. And Modi Govt. wanting to make Hindu compulsory (although retracted now).

There's no national language in India: Gujarat High Court

So everyone going apeshit about the hike in train-fare and blaming Modi and sarcastically saying "Achche Din", let me ask how many of you know that Indian Railways runs on loss and govt. subsidy ? The amount is 30 cr. per day which sums up to 900 cr. per month , I am talking about the loss of Indian Railway in INR .
P.S - UPA govt. was about to hike it by 20% , Modi did only 14% . So shut up and stop crying .

^ wrong fact. This 14% fare hike was done by UPA just days before the elections started. It was deferred by Railway board since they wanted the new govt to approve it.

Yes correct It was in Feb 2014 actually.
Danish Trivedi, Pawan Bansal's predecessor in the railways ministry, had hiked fares in February. However, the increased fares had to be rolled back following opposition within his party, Trinammol Congress. In fact, Trivedi also resigned from his post following the controversy.

This is one such hike. I am pretty sure that there are more such bitter decisions going to be taken in near future. When economy/nation is ill/sick, suffering from disease, the medicine going to be bitter in nature. Also Modi ain't any God or some suparman/iron man sort of superhero. It will take some years to see the actual differences. Irony today, however, is that most people is nation need every thing instant from noodles to growth :(

People are expecting Modi to wave a magic wand and make problems of the country disappear. And that is why any decision which is not populist is frowned upon. Congress as it is wants to sarcastically say "Aache din aa Gaye" when these measures are taken.

I feel that the hikes are moderately justified, but should have been done in staggered steps. Had to go from Andheri to Fort today, and the fast train was late, and massively overcrowded. Will try to avoid trains henceforth :p

As for Modi, please try to get the trains to run on time, and introduce new trains [AC trains, superfast trains to Boisar/Palghar]. Secondly, introduce one common smart card for Mumbai transport. That, could do wonders.

Given what @hotshot05 has written next time you travel it will be less overcrowded thanks to the fare hike ;)

Its not going to happen. Firstly, BEST takes too much time vs train. Secondly, Metro is only on VAG line. Thirdly, dunno about Modi sarkar, but if current political party (no guesses needed) continues in Mumbai with assembly elections nearby, I think we should see Metro 2 in 10 years.

There is some talks about 100% FDI in railways. What does that mean and is it any good ?
Yes, it's very good. That will unlock the value of our railways, bring world class services, bring efficiency and competency.

But with 100% FDI, like any other sector, we need a strong regulator which I think this gift can set up and let them work freely.

Hike before Budget means another hike around or no change in budget. If its withdrawn it will be shown as even the MODI government doesn't have a strong backbone to take decisions.

I am amused the way Congress reacts saying MODI government taking such harsh decision. At least they shouldnt forget just 3 months back they were in power and were doing similarly in OIL and GAS.People still haven't forgotten what they did and how after looting government coffers people like MALLYA ,RAJA and others still party hard.Whereas small taxpayers for small mistakes are harassed.

Also another foolish thing is coming from media is interviewing LALU PRASAD YADAV.I know he talks about all surplus and b#$sh$t he did.Which was shown by Mamta banarjee how hollow his claims were. All income was shown as profit and this guys goes to management school preaching how he change the railway pocket.Later it was realized the most common mistake of accounting EXPENDITURE column was missing from his book. And actually Lalu term was more horrible. When there is no one to AUDIT Government books like Railways such misdeed will happen .And Idiots will try again ad again to come into main politics.

The sad part is common man still doesn't understand basic politics. They cry it how hard on pocket but you wont realized later how situation will go out of control if changes not done.COuntry might be hit with riots if government start going Spain Greece way of taxing 50% of salary .

With Lalu, we had more trains to bihar :p

I think the Railways/Transport Ministry should be run by bureaucrats, and not by ministers + a common authority, All India + States for Rail/Road/Light Rail/etc. A unified approach is best.

Let us take Mumbai for example - many people go to BKC, Andheri, Nariman Point, apart from these, other places too, for work. Ensure that there is a well oiled network for transport, and all should work with each other. Plus, the fares should be such that it should not pinch the pocket. For example, we have the mono rail, but it goes no where now, and takes too much time. The metro does not have great feeder services at several locations! The Airport should be connected to the metro by a mono rail. And on and on....

Okay, so this 14% hike seems to be more than 100% hike for Mumbai local travellers.

As per the revised fares, effective 25 June, a Rs 85 monthly season ticket (II Class) will now cost Rs 150, while a Rs 190 monthly pass will be priced at Rs 480. Similarly, the monthly season pass of Rs 795 for the first class has been revised to Rs 1,930. Likewise, a first class commuter with a monthly pass of Rs 1,740 will now have to shell out Rs 2,120 more for the same journey.
