How significant is the ram's core speed for gaming?

Are ddr2 rams with different core speeds (say 800MHz and 1066Mhz) compatible?

Does buying from a brand like Corsair, Kingston better than buying the cheaper alternatives?

Would a single 4 gb stick be better than two 2 gb ones?

Thanks for your time.

Yes its the most common and default ones.

There are some ram from corsair and gskill which operate @ cl 7 & cl8. Gaming rams.

You can tweaks the timings on your rams if your ram and mobo supports that.

^ that is absolutely fine.

Regarding your other questions

1) 800MHz and 1066Mhz will be compatible but the ram's will work on the speed of slow Ram, in this case 800 Mhz

2) better to go for branded ones as they have better quality, good after sales support and more durable. I think RAM prices have gone down drastically , you shouldn't have any problem in buying them.

3) 2x2 GB will work in dual channel mode where as 1x4 GB will not.

Thanks for the help everyone, anyway, I've decided to get Sandy Bridge and a new ddr3 mobo, so, I'll probably get 2x2GB Corsair rams.

Also, this article was pretty informative.
