smhow my problem is gone now..although i havent installed SP2 as yet...
i would suggest u try reinstalling windows again albert once more...:)

What kind of reinstalltion did you do? i mean there are 2 one that does it automaticly (so called upgrade) & the other (so called Advanced users) , the first one fixes the problems you have in windows, the second one is a total new fresh windows installation...

I just wanna ask you guys something, lets forget the problem & all, why wouldn't the windows start with unless 4 sticks of ram? why wouldn't he start with the 2 old ones or with the 2 new ones in different slots & combinations, i mean what could be the problem for this?

So lets just say i wanna start my windows with one 512mb & he wouldnt start, where should i look?

Thats more of an issue of WinXP, get a Win98se and it will boot up with 512 mb.

So in other words a new total fresh windows installtion? i dont have a Win98se, i know where to get it from, but i mean your saying that there is a probelm with windows xp pro, right?

WTF???
cmon, WinXP starts with even 256DDR ram, (diff story tht its slow)......
SERIOUSLY , AP ur probs is :S
cant thnk of nythng , why it wont boot with a single or 2 sticks.

but id ur gonna load up 98, mayb u cud do a clean install of winXP bfore tht ;)

Check this out, i have 3 ram sticks in so that is 1.5GB, ok..

Now check this out...

Ok now maybe you would check this out too, can any1 explain to me how did 1,5GB translate into 2GB ...

I think the is the first of its kind in mankind history

that 2GB is the virtual memory. its is a temporary hard drive space used by windows for running applications....as u r having 1.5 GB of memory, I would recommend that you disable virtual memory on your PC....you dont require it now..

Isnt tht Paging File Size??
BTW u got 150 GB of memory, not 1.5 :P

Nyways n the last screenie try changing the custom initial nd maximum size BOTH to 512mb nd restart :)

U hav a lot of mem, u dnt need tht big a paging file

From what i know disabling virtual memory is not a good idea at all.

My question now, is how to start windows with 1 512mb ?

Hmm Win XP starts on 64mb SDRAM too, I have used it on my P2 too, thats not the issue, Win XP has issues especially with hardware changes. AL do a backup Format completely, and install a fresh copy of WIN XP. Also this issue is not new, one of your memory sticks is spoilt or one or more of your Dimm slots is spoilt. To isolate the cause you will need to memtest the RAM on some other PC>

i Wud say do Yes, nd restart with a single ram stick if u can ;)

well u say u hav tried single sticks in evry slot nd ur babe didnt boot, dnt thnk can suggest nythng

do a clean XP install with a single stick if u can, dnt thnk it will giv errors thr ;)

Nope he wont start with 1x512mb in it niether 2x512mb, i am gonna try to check the sticks one by one at a friend, lets see what comes up..

btw, how can i disable "performance mode".

al try setting the pagefile to 1500mb instead of 512mb .

performance mode can be enabled/disabled in bios. what board are you using ?

think it would be better to disable pat/performance mode and try running all 4 sticks and see if its ok

pat is only for boards based on the 875 chipset and above (not sure about the above part :D) .. and on non intel boards based on the 865 chipset where the manufacturers unlocked the feature

Ok folks, problem solved! and here is the secret. (highlighted in red)

Yep, the day i did that windows reinstalltion, i did some updates to the mobo recommended by MSI, when those were done, my windows wouldnt boot, so i wont in bios & fixed it and one of the settings i changed was "Load high perfromance", yes guys thats what i did :S , after bottle's reply i went & loaded bios default settings.

I ran windows memtest for more then 10 hours, not even 1 single error...

Then i ran Goldenmemory for about 2 hours, no errors.

Then i ran memtest86 for more then 6 hours no errors.

Ok, so why doesnt windows start with 1x512mb in it, the answear lays as Rocky said, do a fresh windows installtion with 1x512mb in it, as you know windows registers your hardware ,i havent dont it yet, but i strongly believe that is the problem there..

What i also noticed is "performance mode" in cpu-z is still written is "enabled" maybe there is some bug or something..

On the other hand, it was this one small issue that solved this mystery problem.

Thanks to all of you who helped me out, i am very thankful to you all!
