Hi,

When I start my rig, RAM usage is usually around 1.5 GB but slowly as the time passes on it goes upto 5GB. It usually takes 24 hrs to go to 5GB

Can anyone suggest a remedy?

My rig -
i7-920
ASUS P6T deluxe
6GB 1600Mhz Corsair RAM
Vista Ultimate 64 bit

omg! :O 5gb ram utilization ?? and is that at idle ? :O this can only be the case if ur running a db off your system or multiple vm's or something like that......please check in task manager which process is utilizing your resources and post back.

Actually when i start it has 1.5 GB utilization and slowly it increases to 5GB if i keep my comp. running for 24 or more hours.

I will post back when it gets to 5GB..

Download the utility process explorer from microsoft's site and try seeing which process is using your memory that much may be some process is running in the background which uses it too much also how much is your original RAM because 1.5 GB is also a heavy utilization because i have 2 GB RAM and use Win 7 and my idle utilization is 943 MB.

1 GB at idle on Vista is pretty normal

But 5GB and increasing overtime at idle - is not

And also your processes info aint showing that its filling up the 5gig

maybe some rogue process taking up so much of RAM, not sure

Have u cleaned the system for virus/trojans etc

Stop unnecessary services in services.msc and see if it helps a bit

Its actually a feature of windows vista... it would cache all the applications you use in the memory so all of it is actually utilized... this causes the system to respond a lot slower... you can disable this feature by turning off the "prefetch" service from "services.msc".... this functionality is more efficient in windows 7... its my personel experience after playing crysis for hours....

I'm so sorry, the name of the service is "Superfetch" while the job it does is prefetch :ashamed:, try looking up for superfetch and disable it... and then check if the system is still using up 5gb of memory...

Most probably wat i can figure out is that there is some worm in your system which is utilizing your ram, run a full virus scan with a good antivirus.
