Razer Copperhead Review

Introduction

Razer™ is a brand that doesn’t need an introduction, they have been producing gaming mice since an eternity(ok, I know exaggeration). Each mouse is tentatively named after a snake, be it Viper, Salmander, DaimondBack or this baby, the CopperHead. We got all so excited when we heard about this mouse a month back, created a lot of hype, but one thing always remained at the back of everyone's head, Believe the Hype??

Overview

The mouse, beside the specs is amazing, if you know what I mean. It bears the distinctive Illuminated Razer back, and a Razer logo on top that glows from time to time adding to the "sexy" appeal of the mouse. the Copperhead is available in three different colors, Red, Blue and Green, but nothing quite beats the cool blue look of it, at least for me.

We tested this mouse on eXactMat, which is needless to say the best that Razer had to offer

The Packaging

Got the CopperHead and the eXactmat from the Razer store for 89 USD and 30 USD respectively, got free shipping because the order was above 100$, sweet, isn’t it? It was shipped via UPS and for the entire shipping duration, I sat, tracking the order and biting my nails in anxiety. Finally, the tracking status read "Hyderabad". A day went by with no update, could not hold on longer, called those UPS guys and inquired what’s happening, and they said, "We are having difficulties in finding your address sir" and I was like mad with anger, lol
Anyways, directed their delivery boy and in about an hr, the package was in my hand, signed the receipt, still quite angry. Took the package with me, actually ran with it inside and ripped it open, the packaging was good; the entire thing was wrapped in two layers of bubble wrap. Finally, I had it in my hand, the Copperhead, forgot everything else when I saw it, including my anger at those UPS fellows.

Box Contents

Well, didn’t really care about anything else that came with it, except of course the mouse itself. But did receive the manual, ownership certificate and driver CD with it, which surprisingly didn’t work, had to download the drivers off their website.

Here is a look at the driver cd that came along with the Copperhead

The front of the Copperhead, two long buttons with rubberised grip makes it easier to click. The Scroll wheel is not too smooth, nor too tight, but just perfect so that you dont turn too much or turn too less and select the wrong gun

The back portion of the Copperhead, the Razer logo clearly visible and the words "First Edition" written on it, which makes the owner proud

Here we take a look at the underside of the Copperhead, the 2000 DPi laser sensor, the reset button as well as the product details of the mouse visible

Take a look at the Razer 2000 Dpi sensor. its powerd by Class I laser which is completly harmless to eyes. The reset button comes in handy when you want to reset your mouse and remove all your saved profiles

Software

All Razer mice come with the configuration utility that lets you optimize your Razer mouse exactly to your liking. lets take a closer look at the configuration utility of Copperhead. Once started, the Razer configuration utility minimizes itself at the tray menu.

The utility lets you change the sensitivity of X and Y-axis independently as well as customizing the 7 buttons available according to your liking. you can also adjust the windows pointer speed and various other mouse options

Here, the 32 KB of onboard memory comes into use, you can save five different settings in your mouse, what’s the use? well just plug the mouse in any new pc, load the software and your ready to go, now no need to waste time or look stupid customizing you mouse at LAN Parties..

Final Verdict

The Razer Copperhead is, without doubt the leader in High precision mouse that are available at the moment, with its impressive specs, Ultra cool looks, Comfort or build quality. With the amount of customization that you can do with this mouse, its going to suit everyone just perfectly. The Razer Copperhead is certainly the best gaming mouse money can buy at the moment, making the 89.99 US$ worth every cent.

Well this is my first full blown review. Any comments/suggestions are welcomed, please post in this thread if you have to say anything....

Special thanks to Sadiq a.k.a Evil who was kind enough to let me use his mouse for this review, thanx Saddy, u the man ;)

very very nice review.

But as of now, sitting on my bed, 6 feet from my cabby, I amthanking my stars that I bought the MX 700 cordless. What good would the Razer be for me in this situation?? :P :bleh:

But nice review. Repped.

@ Rave.. The 32KB thing will be VERY USEFULL for me and other LAN gamers who go here and there for tourneys.

I can carry my CS Config, CPL MouseFix Remove (some ppl use MouseFix, i dont)

Thats sooo darn useful :@... Darn why didnt the G5 have this memory :@... Anyways.. my G5 coming @ the end of this month...

the mousefix & removemouse fix is there at all tourneys. so its of no use.

plus no1 will allow u to get ur own config since no1 has the time to sit n check it.

it doesnt take time to make a cs config.

^ ^ Exactly, in tourneys u aint allowed to bring ur own hardware, hell if that was the case, i wud take my pc and play css for wcg qualifiers...

What???? YOU AINT ALLOWED TO BRING YOU OWN HARDWARE???

Rave are you in your right mind??

Yes you can take your PC and play.

Its allowed in WCG. Jeesh, get your facts straight.

Atleast in mumbai its allowed :P.

Conclusion :

1. Precision surface optimised for gaming
2. Speed / Control surface for high / low sensitivity gamers
3. Oversized 444mm x 355mm x 4.3mm design
4. Fibertekâ„¢ cloth weave for superior performance
5. Rubber base ensures grip on the smoothest surfaces

Puns aside the Mantis makes for a great mousing surface. It's big enough to let you thrash your hand around frantically without having to constantly lift and reposition, not that you'll need to now, plus it offers enough grip for fine control while also being slick enough for those fast-paced whip-turns.

The mat construction is basically textile on a 4mm rubberised foam backing that sticks to your desk like shi mud to a blanket. Apparently this isn't just any old textile though, oh no, this is Fibertek which means...well...it means its really cool that's what. Apparently the weave makes for high precision tracking from all manner of optical meece and ball varieties too, though if you're using a ball-mouse why do you want a Mantis?

In practise the mat worked flawlessly and should impress even the hardened gamer. my gripe with cloth pads is that over time they tend to roll at the edges as the textile separates from the backing. The Mantis hasn't yet, and perhaps never will, but every other foam-backed cloth mouse mat I've used has so I'm assuming this one will in time. For now though it's big, bold and bright and works like a charm, it's almost a pleasure getting fragged.

The Copperhead and Mantis are both great additions to the serious gamer's arsenal but neither will make life any easier, quicker or more comfortable for the regular user, in fact the time investment needed to grow accustomed to the quirky handling of the Copperhead is pointless unless you plan on taking advantage of its strengths, and its strengths are high-paced high-precision gaming. I actually found the Copperhead to be a touch light for my gaming tastes so it was good to hear that razer offer an optional Pro-Tools kit which consists of a pair of dummy buttons to make two of the four side buttons inactive and thus impossible to press by accident and also a selection of weights which are placed inside the mouse. This of course voids your warranty.

Being symmetrical the Copperhead is suitable normal or southpaw gamers but you sacrifice a certain amount of comfort and ergonomics in return. You can learn to live with the shape but those side buttons need a little more thought.

Gripes aside, the Copperhead is a great gaming mouse with a marksman's instinct for the kill.

One really should think twice before jumping onto the Razer bandwagon... ;)
