Cable and DTH viewers are set to get a wider choice, with Anil Ambani Group firm Reliance Communications expected to start nationwide commercial operations of its DTH service from August 15.

'Big Digital TV DTH', a subsidiary of Rcom, is betting big on the huge potential of home entertainment in the Indian households.

It is estimated that India has over 124 million TV households, with roughly 80 million using the conventional cable delivery platform.

DTH operators in the country, Tata Sky, DishTV and Sun are estimated to have a user base of around 7-8 million.

Big Digital TV DTH would announce its tariff plans in the next few days before the launch of services, sources close to the development said.

When contacted company spokesperson refused to comment.

Sources, however, said Big Digital TV DTH would unleash an aggressive launch plan with an aim to become the largest DTH operator in the country in the first year of operation.

The company is believed to have placed order for 5 million Set Top Boxes with Korean and Taiwanese vendors to meet its requirements in the first year, they said, adding Big Digital TV is targetting to capture a substantial share of the DTH market that is projected to cross 25-million user base in the next three years.

The company has already completed trial runs across 2,400 towns and the service is currently available for customers of other Reliance ADAG group companies for Rs 1,000.

waiting for them launch ,wish they could send ripples in the DTH market as they did in Mobile industry by launching the RIM at Rs.500/- :ohyeah:

i feel Indian dth companies must start pricing for individual channels....packages r not that user specific..hope big tv brings something close to that..cant wait to look at their dvr/pvr pricing..

^that means more price per channel. sun dth asking 20 rupees /month for set max is an example.

i really dont understand why the TRAI is not putting its foot down.

according to its regulations, DTH operators are obligated to provide channels A-La-Carte...

they have the same regulations for local cable walas in CAS notified places. and i get to choose any channel i want for a max of 5 bucks..(which btw is a price set by the TRAI).

god knows when TRAI will get the dth operators under control.

true...there is Sun network package...me being from karnataka...i dont watch malayalam and telugu....little bit of tamil....but have to pay for mallu and telugu channels...same with etv ,star and zee packages....TRAI shud step in...indivvidual specific is one of the points of having dth...and this horrible plans and packages mess it up..given individual pricing i am sure most of indians can limit their monthly bills to around 180 approx..

Atleast they should provide regional channels on A-La-Carte basis. Why should i pay for tamil or gujrati channels when i don't watch it.Also all these kiddy channels should be brought under an add on package.

And when the hell are they gonna launch adult channels .......active adults:D:D just like active sports ??

Hope Big TV offers an exchange program.... surrender Tata Sky / Dish TV connection and get free installation for Big TV... :P :P
