Guide Really Really low power consumption(1 Watt!) Download Rig

OK people, this is my first ever tutorial here and most of u top horn doggies must be knowing it already :hap2: but I think its great for n00bies like me. :ohyeah:

So lets start now. What I plan to tell u all here is how to use a Mobile phone as a Download rig. First of all u'll ask why use a phone when u can get proper download rigs and seedboxes, well here are my points in favor of it:

  1. Very Low power consumption, almost null ;)
  2. No heating issue
  3. Highly portable
  4. Coolness Factor :D
  5. Maximized Resource Utilization

Lets start with the ingredients ;

  1. A Broadband Connection
  2. WiFi gateway or Switch
  3. WiFi enabled phone

As for the connection, I have BSNL's HOME 1350UL which provides steady 57-59KBps Download speed and upto 62KBps Upload speed.

For WiFi gateway I used my recently acquired UTStarcom WA3002G4 wireless gateway provided by BSNL.

For WiFi enabled phone, I used my year old trusty E51. Its the cheapest WiFi enabled phone out there. I still advise anybody wanting to try this to first get a Symbian60 OS based device like N95 etc.

Now first in order to be able to access the Internet on your WiFi phone first u'll need to change your modem's access method from Bridging to PPPoE inside the modem's firmware. A detailed how-to has already been posted by deathvirus_me, check it out here. :hap2:

Now on to the phone.

  1. Detect the WiFi network
  2. Define it by providing key etc.
  3. Now goto phone's Settings Menu.
  4. Settings>Connection>AccessPoints
  5. Scroll down to the WiFi access point and select it
  6. Goto Options>Advanced Settings
  7. First comes the IPv4 settings, same drill as configuring LAN

No need to tinker with IPv6 settings or the Proxy settings.

Now try to surf the web, it should work. After this either through phone itself or through PC, goto Sym Torrent's site. From Downloads select the SIS package and install it. If doing the process in the phone itself then no problem but from PC, u will have to use PC suite for installation. Now as this is a relatively old software so you'll have to manually change the phone's date to a year 2008 date to prevent Certificate Expiration conflicts.

After this the package is installed and you are ready to run it.

Now either from phone or a PC place a torrent file in a folder. Open SymTorrent, add that file from the folder and select the destination. Destination will be of course the memory card unless u have a phone with huge onboard memory like N95 8GB version. Now in the download will start showing the number of seeders and download speed. Just to check, I download some Shakira wallpapers and my download speed was 35-40KBps. :hap2: The completed downloads then can be accessed in memory card under a Bit Torrent folder.

SymTorrent works on port number 6881. I had no problem whatsoever whilst receiving Incoming connections but if some of you still want to or are having trouble with it, then can try port forwarding it from inside the modem's firmware.

Adios Amigos

You sure BSNL UL1350 has upload speeds of 60KBps?
If BSNL UL1350 is same as MTNL 512kbps UL (includes 500 free calls) which costs 1299 + taxes, then yes.
I get 55-57KB up/down in my connection.

Do what I did

Find a compatible router with a USB Port

Install Open-WRT on it

Attach HDD on it and torrent away

Thats what I do on my WRTSL54GS.

I agree you wont get 1Watt but I guess it wont be more than 5-10 Watts

Don't do this unless you really want to kill the battery on your phone. It may sound like a good idea at first but trust me it's not. I have had experience :P

The same retails for >100$

not all mobiles within 10k are wifi enabled...so it will be waste of money just to save power...good for those who have wifi enabled phones...:)still atom is unbeatable in power consumption..

@Ryunosuke The E51 is not the cheapest phone with Wi-fi. The cheapest phone with Wi-Fi is Asus P320. Manu1991 mentioned somewhere that it is selling for Rs.8.4k(inclusive of tax) whereas the E51 sells for around 11k.

ANd this method is not really ideal from a phone's point of view. The PCB may get damaged due to continuous charging. Also the Battery will be destroyed very soon if you go on charging continuously. After sometime, you battery will get discharged in 5-10 mins since the battery will think that its capacity is that much only. This happens because you did not let the chemicals react properly and the charge level did not go down much. So the capacity will be decreased since the battery will think that its maximum capacity has decreased to that level.

This think used to happen a lot with the Ni-Mh batteries and the ordinary AA batteries. It is not known to happen so much with Li-Ion or Li-Pol batteries if used normally. But if you do this continuously, evan this can happen.

Model 652
Code:

Look carefully, model 652 is capable of BT, FTP,etc and not 651.

This thing looks pretty darn good for ~2k, might buy it.

@Photostar: Yes, but no USB port so doesn't really make sense, unless you buy a NAS box and mount it as NFS Volume

@udayrulz: Yes but it is totally worth it. Considering my rig has a 400W Power consumption at 70% efficiency

Really nice talk going on this thread...

I looked into this thread to see a 1 Watt consumption gadget. But to say honestly, I was disappointed... Good effort to convince though...;)

I haven't used symtorrent, or never even tried installing it on mobile. I don't want to put my cellphone charging overnight or 24x7. It really makes the battery go bad, the card too..(Don't say that cards are cheap.. 5800 8GB cards seems to be at least around Rs 1500+ :@)

To control torrent client on PC , you can use the method discussed on this thread. http://www.techenclave.com/mobile-phones/stream-content-pc-5800-xm-any-132671.html#post1091226 (At least, its working for me. :))

People who are more interested in a gadget can check out this link too..

TG Daily - Marvell's Plug Computer: A tiny, discrete, fully functional 5 watt Linux server

It talks about a 5 watt Linux machine in the size of a plug charger!! I don't know about its availability.

We can start a GO, if its worth it.
