I believe we are getting lazier by the day. I mean how long does it take to backup a data on a DVD ? I usually burn 5-6 DVDs by the end of the week , all it takes me is some 1 hour. Optical media will always be a popular storage option. We are using DVDs now, in some years we will be using Blu-ray for storage. HDDs are never going to completely replace optical media imo.
But then again the question stands is that all media goes corrupt at any point. The big picture is how much loss do we stand to incur.Sure we will use Blu-Ray & Dual layer Blu-Ray sometime in the near future which means a mega back up of 25B-50GB & loosing one such disc with so much data would be a huge blow.Unless you have it backed up elsewhere too.;)

^Yes , that is the reason it is safe to have 2 backups of important data. That is the very reason i am thinking of buying an external HDD. But even after i buy an external HDD , I would still continue backing up my data on DVDs.

Also in the upcoming years , it would be a lot easier to "RE-GET" your lost data. I am sure with a 20-30 mbps connection , regetting all those lost movies and songs wont be a problem. Also uploading your "important data" on some site will be a lot easier.

@ Ethan

Thats the point. DVD collection is more of a bragstuff to friends than for personal use. And once you lend movie DVDs to friends the following 2 happens.

1. Either you never see the face of that DVD ever

2. It comes back with generously drawn grafitis on its reading surface to the extent that its not readable anymore.

I would rather get my friend to get his portable or a DVD or two and select from the movies that I have on my HDD.

@ Bluffmaster

when the age of 20-30mbps connection comes I bet there wud be HD movies with 20-30 GB sizes to get .. so the scene doesnt change much
