Don't bother starting the system with defective HDD plugged in. It'll waste a lot of time and you may break your good hdd.
Hotplug it.
Start your system normally, open device manager then hotplug the hdd into one of the sata ports. Then keep refreshing in device manager. If it still doesn't get detected then,
1. rotate it,
2. keep it upside down,
3. unplug, plug back in different sata port,
4. Rub contact points with pencil eraser,
5. Clean with isopropyl alcohol,
6. be creative
and keep refreshing in device manager. It'll eventually get detected after several tries. Once it gets detected, immediately take backup.
You may need to enable sata hot plugging from the bios before all. Also do try it on different motherboards.
