Continuing on OK1....

I really like them now. Tried briefly with iPod Video -> ZO2, but did not like the result much. May be it was my fit. Now, listening via the usual brick stack of QA350 -> Digital Out -> UHA-6S.

Put the Breppies on and found a half way decent fit. Without a decent fit, it sounds bass light and bright.

The two things that really stands out for me with OK1 are the mid range and the presentation. The mid range is very transparent, but not dry at all. It's so good (for my tastes, that is), that it might be the first ear bud that gets used on a semi-regular basis than just "burn it, compare it, lock it" as is the case with the rest. I can say it's lush and somewhat liquid, but quite unlike RE262 (which is thick and liquid, but also very focused on mid range in it's presentation).

Coming to the presentation, sound stage is wide and open. The location cues are somehow just about right. I am not sure if I can explain this properly, but in it's sound space, OK1 seems to be putting just about the right distance. Too much and you get the MX760 and too less, most other congested sounding phones. I can't say it's either recessed or forward. It seems to strike the right balance between putting you on the stage and placing you 4-5 rows back. Now that I am listening to Nirvana's "Unplugged", I can say it's more like watching them live.

Bass on the other hand is not great in quantity when used as an ear bud. I'd say something like RE272, but with may be better quantity. I don't think it extends to the lowest lows. It should be better than say, RE0 since it does not have a mid-bass hump. It's bass presentation is somewhat closer to Etymotic HF2 in one aspect - not well rounded or punchy, but you won't miss the bass with the right fit. With the Fischer IB-120, I can get plenty more bass quantity out of it.

Treble is crisp sounding, but not too forward or aggressive. It won't compete with the likes of CK10 or DBA-02 anytime soon, but it's good that it does not have much of an irritating bump as far as I can tell.

Overall, I don't feel like I dumped $110 on a lowly ear bud, rather I'd say it's one of my better purchases this year. In terms of SQ, it's hard to think it'll beat my fave four anytime, but I'd place it somewhat middle of the next tier. I'd like to see how I feel about this a few months down the line. But the important fact is that OK1 can live happily side by side with my limited IEM collection and not feel threatened by it. That's much more than what I can say for the rest of the earbuds I've tried thus far!

PS: Bad thing - Now I want to know how PK1 and Blox M2C sound :ashamed:

^^ Nice impressions, now get the PK3 too :P reviews say that it has the best bass+most VFM option in the yuin lineup.

Actually, I am thinking of getting a PK1 or Senn MX980 (used). But, before that, I might just try the Blox. Blox M2C goes for $40 and can be reduced to $30 on orders of 5. That's said to be better than Blox TM.5, which was considered on par with OK1 by some. Right now it's out of stock and it might take about 5 weeks for them to get it back in stock.

Thinking about it - damn! I am talking about buying ear buds instead of custom IEMs. But then, customs can wait, probably forever....
