Hi,

I have imported a few things with fedex and I always get charged around 60% of product value as custom duties+octroi+sevice tax+'reimbursement fees' etc.

Anyone know why it is so high? Whatever I import its always the same, whether it be electronics or even plastic based things.

Is it possible to reduce it (I cannot tell shipper to undervalue or mark as Gift).

hmm.. idont knw. abt when u get it shipped ..but when i go to singapore /US etc. with my dad.. and while returnning.. we always pay less duty..cauz there is 12 k per person minimum allowance.. and then u can undervalue the items .with the officials..as most of them dont knw the exact value. sometimes they dont even tell u to put u r bags for screening..

and the last alternative. is giving under the table (if u dont mind )..but thts not a good idea (only a last option if u r getting looted )...

so its better when u get items personally wid u..

for me it is not a problem..as my dad is a AIR INDIA staff and i get free tickets...

also its better if u have contacts ..wid ppl in customs .!!

where r u frm Faheem?

Kn any1 in hyd who can help in such matters...

Not always...just for once...

Maxx the best away to deal with this is ditch fedex.

If its from US then go for EMS, it costs less, takes little longer to arrive but you dont have to pay such heavy set of duties and tax.

The fedex fee itself is too high. Then they consider any damn import as commercial. They had charged me 16% CVD which shouldnt be on a personal import. But they do charge that and even after telling them and showing them the article from the customs book they told now they cant do anything :@

Just skip Fedex and DHL. I have had better experience using USPS EMS and UPS.

its pretty simple if someone is shipping for you, they can undervalue the product and mark it as gift, and send via fedex or USPS (recommended). Though i think my uncle knows the custom officials here and you wud get cleared @ govt rates on the marked value, that is if the value sats 10$ and duty is 40%, ud have to pay 4$ extra only and not what the custom official feels like charging you lol

yes, that is what am saying....

state gift item and value it 10$, or sample piece of testing purpose, something like that, so even if they charge 100% tax which they wont u can pay...

I AM FROM MUMBAI ..and my dads..knws only a few custom officials at mumbai airport..tht too cauz he used to work at the airport for a few years..but now as he has been shifted to the air india building at nariman point..doesnt have much cntcs... and he says..he wont be able to help u with matters at hyd airport..sorry..dude !!
