Laptops repairing a powerbook G4 - is it worth it?

Not sure what prompted that comment True_Power... Care to elaborate?

Yea, please read the posts on page 1.... if you're a mac veteran, you'd say ignorance at the best...

Starting something demanding like Garage tunes takes well over 20 seconds on the G3

the interesting fact is even a G3 computer(almost 10yr old processor) is usable/able to run the latest OS and demanding apps. i can guarantee x86 pc from the same era would choke to death.

And oh, forgot to mention tracerbullet's lappy aint G3, but 1.67Ghz G4 :P ,
Running Tiger on a Core Duo Mac Mini (see my sig) vs running it on a G3 (My usability team uses an iMac G3) is akin to:

unless you are using original iMac 233Mhz G3, with 128MB RAM and 10GB HDD, you are right.... OS X or any modern OS performs better if you've got more'n faster storage.

I run garageband or other audio apps on these underpowered (for those who think anything slower than 2Ghz is a waste) macs PowerMac Dual G4/450, PowerBook G3/500 and later models without any problems.

hope this helps.... :hap2:

Okay, an update:

As it turns out, and owing to much silliness on my part - the power G4 is not a 17-incher. It's a 15.2" widescreen which I mistakenly assumed was 17 inches. This changes the estimate as well.

1. The repair costs have now been upped to 5,000 Rs For the hard drive, optical drive, some broken ICs, minor bodywork, and a cracked logic board.
2. The new apple 15.2" panel costs 13,000 Rs

So the total still remains at 18,000. I've gone ahead with the repairs and plan to do stability testing for a couple of days before I do the screen replacement. Also, ebay America sells 15.2 panels for much cheaper (about 100-150$) which is about 4,000 to 6,000 Rs - less than half the cost I've been quoted! So, I'm going to try and have a friend pick up a panel for me and then have it fitted locally.

man, cracked logicboard or broken ICs aren't good.... you could have brought an used one for the same from ebay, if your friend's willing to bring it.

^^ Spoke like a true Mac Fanboi

dude, then all i can say is you love seeing the revolving ball (for the windows guys, it's the same as the hourglass)

Hell, even a G4 1.42 ghz with 512 MB drops frames on divx videos when anythng marginally processor intensive like Azureus is running in the background

try doing that on your powerbook G3 ...though I have a feeling that you'll post back saying it runs perfect..after all if you don't, Steve Jobs might take away your mac from you

On a more serious note, I love OS X and I love Mac products...but a G4 can never compete with the newer core Duo (either on Macs or on Windows)

Try using a newer Mac and see how much more snappier it feels

Hope it works out for you Tracerbullet :)

Me planning to get a mac lappy by the year end perhaps :D this thread is useful in case i decide to throw it against the wall

  dude, i'm not a Mac fanboy..... but a techno fanboy, anythig from MIPS - AlPHA - SPARC - PowerVI will do, to be honest, like many uber-geeks i never considered intel chips until now, not because Apples' using them, but we've seen the results.

hmm, I've got 1Ghz PowerBook G4 with 1Gig RAM and Tiger, i usually do that stuff(watch divx movies, download torrents and browse net, on second screen) on G4's & G5's, the G4's never had hickups, and watched divx on PBG3 (without any serious background process running)

though I have a feeling that you'll post back saying it runs perfect..after all if you don't, Steve Jobs might take away your mac from you
Yea, i don't want'em taken away...

I never said that. dude, we don't use cheap consumer products, but workstations, including SPARC's, SGI Indigo, PowerMac's PPC & Xeons, that's why you don't see any cheapo stuff on my sig

cheers.

I have a feeling it is pointless responding to a Fanboi's rants....

Anyway, no true fanboi ever accepts that he is one....

^^There's not a single Indigo or Ultrasparc which has remotely similar performance to an intel core 2 cpu. Stop living in the past. I know of folks getting rid of indigo systems for 1$ each that were replaced with intel/amd cpus and nvidia video cards.

Here's an indigo going for 10$. Suns Ultrasparcs are no better :P.

eBay: Silicon Graphics SGI Iris Indigo 384MB 150Mhz R4400SC (item 320111876778 end time May-14-07 13:02:15 PDT)

dude, you're the proof of ignorance & arrogance at the best. , by the way, what do you use 100k+ rig for ? gaming & porn ?(no personal offense meant) get a life.... dude.

anyway, ppl should understand MIPS & SPEC before posting anything, especially in tech forums.

those SGI, SPARC or whatever processors were state of the art in their era(64bit, high memory bandwidth, faster FSB, larger L2 & L3 caches and almost 10 times faster than Pentiums of similar clock speed), here nobody said they're comparable to current generation processors, anyway still those aren't meant for the general public.

if you haven't used any of these, i forgive you. :hap2:

Thankfully I have way way more important things to do with my machine than gaming and pr0n :P. I have a life and most folks here in this forum know what I do for a living... maybe you are the one in dire need of a life .

Well maybe its just me but I don't see any relationship between SPEC and MIPS. MIPS is an architecture... rather the definition of perfect textbook CPU architecture based on deep pipelining that didn't do that well in the real world in terms of performance... Thats cos textbook architectures don't work in real life whereas crappy ones like x86 do :P. SPEC is a benchmark which has nothing to do with MIPS :P.

Yes they were state of the art ten years ago and faster than intel x86 long ago but not anymore and no they were not ten times faster than pentiums :P. Please don't exaggerate. They are relics of the past and there's absolutely no use bringing those into the picture now cos they are now defunct architectures. Oh and incase you didn't know... I collaborate with one of the founding members and ex VP of SGI for some of my work :P.

Why don't you read the thread title before posting ?
