PC Peripherals Replacing PSU fan.

How do I test my PSU ? I can monitor the temps of my CPU/GPU but how to know whether my PSU is running safe or not ?

Yeah, I can confirm that the previous PSU fan was a 120mm 12v DC 0.35A.

The only way I can tell you is to play games for a time you would normally play, then check the temp of the air coming out of your PSU I bet it would be very hot as the bijli fan is not good enough for it.

The reason I told you to test was that when you are replacing a fan(cooling component), the capacity of it to disipate heat should be equal or more than the previous fan.

In your case its the reverse so I would suggest you to replace it with an equal cooling capacity or better to be on the safe side.

You can replace it with a fan better than the bijli fan which I think cannot serve the purpose of cooling a PSU.

WARNING: Do not play a lot while testing. It could damage your PSU beyond repair as the heat generated may not find an escape route to the extent it should.

Yeah, since it will get more current, would spin more fast
<

No it will draw its rated current and run at its rated speed.

The downside is that as cooleagle mentioned, a lower current rating usually points to a lower rpm fan, so it will be running slower.

#goodakash , does the old fan have a brand and model number? If you can atleast match or exceed the air flow it would be better. Otherwise you need to use the current rating as a guideline. Another thing, is it a 25mm height fan?

This is kinda weird but I am not able to feel any air coming out of the PSU

Exactly what I meant to say !
<

Now buddy don't use your PSU with that fan otherwise the next thing you may see is smoke coming out the PSU.
<

That fan is not good enough to be used for cooling the HDDs forget about it cooling a PSU.

Take the previous fan's spec as the base line & get one with the same spec or better.

Even a CM high RPM case fan will do, just that it should fit in the PSU's designated space without touching anything.

Do update me here on what did you finally do buddy.

Sure, its a branded "Globe Fan RL4B S12025L"

I don't think any one would be keeping this globe fan !! I can get a CM 2000RPM fan for my PSU, what say ?

Yes, its 25mm height fan.

Exactly what I meant to say !

Yeah man, guess I need to buy a new fan now. It felt awkard when there was no air coming out of the PSU. The zebby fan is that crappy ! Can I get a 2000RPM fan in around 250 bucks ?

Cooler Master Sickle Flow series fan(s) and Cooler Master Blade Master / Xtra Flow fan(s) start ~450/-.

Stick to your Globe Fan Sire. Cheers!!

#Crazy_Eddy : Oops, looks like I under-estimated my globe fan !

I have no idea about CM fans, can you recommend me one ? I can extend my budget upto Rs.500 for a 2000RPM fan(I just wanted the fan to be as cheap as possible, but now 67CFM/2000RPM should be bare minimum for my new fan).

#ALPHA17 : Mine globe fan has gone kaput, need to get a new one now ! Can you suggest one ?

@all : I live in delhi, can go to nehru place to get a new fan. I am more inclined towards CM because of their quality products.

SMC International -- http://www.techenclave.com/forum/94-smc-internl/, DVD Store Delhi -- http://www.techenclave.com/forum/90-dvdstoredelhi/ and Mediahome.in [E-bay page] are the big three if you are living in Delhi, you can go to Nehru Place and check them out.

Hope this helps.

P.S. -- going this week to get a third party HSF for my PC, might inquire about these prices too. Cheers!!

#ALPHA17 : Yeah, I am aware of SMC in nehru place, have bought some products(including CM HSF) from them.

I was thinking about getting [font=Tahoma, Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]SickleFlow 120 2000 RPM. [/font][font=Tahoma, Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Its 69CFM also, so quite good for my PSU IMO. [/font][font=Tahoma, Verdana, Geneva, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Should be under Rs.500 I guess.[/font]

It should be ~450/- [not inclusive taxes] --> 500/- - 525/- [inclusive taxes].

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

#ALPHA17 : Thanks buddy for that.

Was wondering that if this CM non LED fan costs around 500 then the LED ones would be costing around 700-800...??

#goodakash, these are how the pricing stands --

Cooler Master SickleFlow Fans [LED with 9 smoked blades] ~500/- [inclusive taxes],

Cooler Master Blade Master [large central hub, non LED 7 bladed] ~550/- [inclusive taxes],

Cooler Master Xtra Flow [Red LED 7 blades] ~575/- [inclusive taxes],

Cooler Master Excalibur [9 bladed premium design] ~900/- [exclusive taxes]

Hope this helps, Cheers!!

#goodakash when do you plan to go to Nehru, maybe I will drop in too, if possible. Cheers!!

Case Update :

Fellas !! I went to SMC today and inquired about CM fans, and bought two Cooler Master 2000RPM/90CFM fans for 800 bucks. One is a Red LED, another one is Green.

Put the red one in my PSU and everything is working absolutely fine now. These fans are really fast and throw a nice amount of air. Really nice. Still can't believe I got them for a reasonable amount.

OT : Fan configuration in my Cooler Master elite 430 :

120mm front intake (default)

80mm bottom(intake)

80mm back(exhaust)

120mm side 2000RPM(intake)

120mm up ~1000RPM(exhaust)

Also, 120mm fan 2k RPM/90CFM in my PSU

Not to forget my CM HSF. Everything is running so cool !!

#vivek.krishnan,#CA50,#flash23,#6pack,#salman8506,#cooleagle,#Crazy_Eddy,#ALPHA17 : Thanks a lot to you guys for helping me out.

Now just do one thing just keep on monitoring the fan's working for a couple of days just to rule out any remote possibility of any problem, then you are good to go for a long time.
