Replying to missed calls leading to SIM cloning. Hoax or technically possible?

Yesterday in TOI there was a news article on when we call back to missed calls from certain numbers, leads to sim cloning. The article went on to say that this could also lead to loss of personal information stored in the phone memory, loss of personal photographs, ATM pins etc.

I am little confused here. I can understand that calling those numbers can lead to callers being charged high rates. But how can it lead to information like phone book information, personal sms or other personal details from being transmitted over the air to those numbers in a few seconds time?

Is anyone aware of how this works?
I somehow have a feeling that these are paid articles by telecom operators to prevent the practice of missed calls to communicate, a practice very prevalent in India.

Here is the article in TOI.

Edit: Also saw a news item on Zee news today morning on the same topic.

Are there any mobile technology experts here who can throw some light on this topic?
Also, has anyone been a victim of this....except for being charged a fortune when you called back the said number?

Mohit

I can't understand the fear mongering.

How can a voice call lead to theft of data or photographs from the mobile ? Please enlighten me.

a lot of people will email this to their friends + another story will come explaining some things are not possible, again people will forward = a gazillion pageviews = ad revenue :P

i searched the net and no sim reader or cloning tool can clone sim cards through a call. the card needs to be physically present in some reader to be cloned. the times article is just pure stupidity.
seems like the news people don't do any research before plastering news all over. epic fail.

Its not possible to clone a SIM simply just by call, forget about a missed call. maybe the kind of tech the military/intelligence guys have, they maybe able to do so, but not us.

What I understand is +92 is the ISD code for Pakistan (even I get missed call from such numbers) probably ISD to Pakistan is very costly but did anyone ever got missed calls from numbers starting with #90 and #09? The last two seems more like USSD code which we dial from our phone, for checking some operator specific features.

Why do i never get any missed calls :O?
I have never even seen these kind of calls?
What network do you people use?
I use Docomo and Reliance.
And i repeat, never a call or missed call!

Give me your number and ill ensure that you start recieving them. Guaranteed, 100%. Me, GT, AK, MJ, AS will start buggering you. CD is excused since he is kinda busy being a pop :P

Hmmm.... so it cannot be done.
I wonder how this thing got coverage in TOI and zee news. Looks like a conspiracy by our telcos to crib practice of communicating via missed calls :)

Why not we guys simply post here the missed calls we get from such unknown zones aka abroad lines...

Here is one i got today at 2.2.am +9759141184, its of Bhutan and seems some landline no. So lets keep ourselves updated by sharing such nos. Sometimes i get missed calls from middle east and pakistan.

I just wanna know that whether somebody deliberately gives us missed call or its simply cross-connection typo thing?? :annoyed:
