My Amaron car battery (purchased in Feb 2004) of my maruti zen car seems to have gone dead. There wasn't any charge or low battery light indication. On turning the key, no response. Tried to push start it but it did not work.(it did last time when the low battery indication light was glowing.) A driver told me that there has to be at least some charge to start the car.

I called U.M cars at Domlur, Bangalore. They sent a service fellow to pick up the battery and take it for charging. I called up the fellow yesterday and he says that the battery refused to charge. He then changed the acid and it still did not charge. He says that I need a replacement. They deal in exide batteries and foll. are the quotes I received.

Exide freedom - 3960 (requires distilled water, 18 months replacement warranty + 18 months prorated)
Exide max - 3200 (requires distilled water, 18 months replacement warranty)
Exide matrix - 4342 (maint free, 24 month replacement warranty + 24 months prorated)

All batteries are rated 38Ah(Ampere hours....whatever that means)
prorated = 10% - 30% discount on purchase of replacement battery in the warranty period depending on month.

My first doubt is whether these guys really did anything to recharge the old battery as the mechanic that came over seemed keen to sell their batteries.

My second doubt is whether the price of the batteries is ok. My driver says that you get car batteries between 1K(local) to 1.4K(amaron) at the end of SP Road.

Please advice. I don't know much about these car thingies. The dealer says that he also doesn't deal in Amaron because their batteries suddenly go dead at the end of the warranty if you don't run the vehicle regularly. But I believe all car batteries have a life of 3 years or so is it not?

Also, is a maintenance free battery preferred to one where you can change the acid, fill distilled water etc? Which is better?

I went for a Amaron MF battery. I guess it was around Rs. 5000 or something for a 55AH battery(after giving my old battery to the dealer). Try asking an Amaron dealer. Offlate, on TeamBHP people have been in favour of Amaron, Another rare brand that has been suggested it Bosch Silver. I would still suggest that you try Amaron.

Secondly, 1K for a local and 1.4 for a Amaron doesn't sounds right. I guess it should be close to Exide prices.

TeamBHP.com is a good site. I was going through it as suggested by Aces. Just the info I need. Yes I observed that people are favouring Amaron and Bosch Silver(supposedly manufactured by Amaron) AC Delco and Optima(way too expensive).

The thing about amaron is that their website is total crap with no info on their products. And I just can't seem to contact them via phone. For a company that builds good batteries, they sure are crappy in the sales dept.

Anyways, an update. I asked the mechanic to get my old amaron battery back. On refitting it in the car, I asked him to start it. Surprise surprise it started. The mechanic seemed shocked. Now I don't know what's going on here but I'm just glad I've my car back. I started it again today and took it for a spin with no issues except the morning choke usage and revving the engine to get it moving which btw I was already doing earlier.

I think I'll manage with this old battery for some time...time to spend some moolah and buy some 500GB HDDs from SP road :).
