Folks, we are procuring some hardware for operations at our company and in this regard, I received a quote of 70K per server HDD from an HP business partner. We require to stock our 14 HDD disk array on our DS 2300 and that takes the total cost just for the HDDs to 9.8L.

Out of curiosity, I had a look at the HDDs in question. It is nothing but a 146GB Seagate Savvio 2.5 inch HDD with a SAS (Serially attached SCSI) interface.

I just want to know folks on this forum have received similar quotes from HP or an HP direct business partner. The pricing to me appears beyond ridiculous. Even if I consider a 50% premium for enterprise hardware, the quote doesn't make sense.

I'd just like to know how seriously, I should consider this quote.

Even a 50% premium would not get that Seagate Savvio anywhere near half the quoted price. Its selling for like $375 for the 15k RPM model. The 10k RPM ones are cheaper still. You should be able to get 3 of those 15k RPM drives for that price.

But I would not be too surprised about it if its a correct quote. I have seen companies like HP, Dell, Apple charge 3~5 times the market price and some times more even for desktop hardware and this is server class hardware we are talking about.

Thanks.

Unfortunately however, I just learnt that we have this stupid company policy of purchasing only from HP as they are our preferred partner for business. Wonder who negotiated that and which island he is picnicking on now . Meanwhile, we are haemorrhaging money in the time of recession.

On the flipside, maybe I should become an HP enterprise reseller :P.

Hmm... maybe someone from the company is getting their cut from HP

btw any chance of procuring them from abroad!?

Procuring something from a non-preferred 3rd party reseller itself in India is a big process. The first question that will be asked to us is why don't we get it from HP Direct :) ? If we cite price, I think they'll say that it's not our concern. If it's been authorized, we can procure it and that's all.

Sure! If the company doesn't care about whether it costs 9L or 9Cr and wants to authorize it anyway

(as going for a cheaper/better solution is questionable and not the concern of those who procure it, acc. to the company), there's little one could do! :(

btw, have you guy's contacted HP directly?

I was just looking going through the HP site and found this via their search function.

HP StorageWorks MSA2 146GB 3G 15K rpm 3.5 inch Dual-port SAS Hard Disk Drive (AJ735A) specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products

I am guessing the StorageWorks is a re-brand for the same drives.

The indicative pricing is given as 25k odd.

Even for the 6G version, I am not sure that price diff would be that drastic. Maybe the reseller quoted for something altogether different. Do check on that.

As far as I am aware Surestore DS 2300 takes ultra160/320 LVD SCSI disks and not SAS. Please check.

A7287A should be the part number for a fitting 146 GB disk.
