Requirements for setting up a web server??

Hey guys a friend of mine was thinking about setting up a server for his dad's multi-million company's website.

So my question is what are the requirements to set up a server and how much will it cost for setting up as well as maintaining?

Why would he want to setup a web server by himself.

If all he wants to do is make a Website for this dad, then he is better off paying Hosting service because it will be a lot cheaper, no hasseles of managing the server, no need for a dedicated line for the server and no worries of downtime..

If he wants a webserver anyways:

Buy a pre-configured server from Dell or IBM
Buy a Static Ip from ISP and also a domain name
Setup the server to host website or webservices

He is looking to expand and has 4 websites running already.

2 more are on the verge.

So was thinking if he would save anything by setting up a server.

So would it be worth setting up one or not?

Also what will be the damage?

P.S. he is currently paying INR 7000 per annum per site.

In short..no

A commercial 2 mbps line costs over 5 lakhs p.a.

unless he has a lot of spare bandwidth that he is already paying for

See the bold letters.... if that's true he wouldn't bother making a site himself.

If he is a geek tell him to get some hosted space and run his own site. IMO you shouldn't mess with a multi-million site even if you're the proprietors son.... it affects sales...

There are things such as colocation or shared servers. Colocation is where you buy a server or pay the host to buy it for you, and then pay them for giving you bandwidth and rack space for your server. Or dedicated servers where they have ready made packages for the entire thing and give you the whole server.

A large company should consider a fully managed hosting service like Dedicated Server - Dedicated Server Hosting - Managed Dedicated Server by Rackspace

Either rent a dedicated server somewhere in the US, which would cost around $100-150/mo depending on the specs or just buy shared hosting which should work in most cases.

I would however advise you to stay away from GoDaddy's hosting, you should rather opt for either Site5 - Home or Web Hosting by DreamHost Web Hosting: Web Sites, Domain Registration, WordPress, Ruby on Rails, all on Debian Linux!

Guys let me make one thing clear He is not making the site .

They were just considering shifting to a self maintained server if it made sense.

From the discussion so far it doesn't seem worth the cash currently.

Well if he has some good Infrastructure and people who can maintain it, its not a problem if not. Count in the following..

If businesses critical application runs on that server [One will need a
Failover server.
Failover Internet connectivity.
Firewall
Power Backups.
Daily data Backups.

Best option as others have mentioned, go locate a good DC and get a dedicated server, if needed go with failover server too [Clustering]..
