after a long wait my parents have finally agreed to give me 25k(not a paisa more) to upgrade my 5-year old PC of the following configuration:
Intel P4 (478 pin) 1.66Ghz
mobo with VIA chipset and onboard video
Transcend 256MB DDR400 RAM
40GB Samsung HDD
LG CD-writer
Samsung 17inch monitor
Microsoft keyboard-mouse combo
modem(i still hv a dial-up net connection)
Mercury 2.0 speakers
.....first of all,i have decided to keep the monitor,modem,keyboard-mouse...so that i can spend the 25k to get everything inside the cabby.
my usage is mainly for net, storing music,Autocad,C++,storing movies AND some 'casual' gaming.
i WILL NOT get to upgrade for another 5 yrs...so this configuration is got to work OK even then...meaning it should be able to run Vista and play the games available TODAY(i cant ask for more, can i?) at low resolutions.
so here's what i was thinking:
1.proccy-Anthlon64 or Pentium D...which would be better(and future proof)
2.mobo with decent onboard video(coz a getting a gfx card at this price is impossible,i guess?)
3.160GB(atleast) HDD
4.1GB RAM
5.cabinet with 400W SMPS
6.DVD writer
7.2.1 speakers
could u please suggest a suitable configuration with the above requirements along with approximate prices...coz i HAVE to get the BEST possible configuration that will last me 5 years.

P.S:1.will i get any money at all if i try and sell my present configuration???
2.i can wait till year-end to get this new PC.

I have an extra motherboard .. An original Intel d865gbf.

I had bot it coz my mobo got screwed and intel was taking too long to replace it. My pop couldn't wait so much so had to buy it.

Now the replacement piece is just idle.

Let me know if u interested.

if u can wait till year end then i would suggest waiting... expect mor price drops on both the AMD and Intel front :)

abt waiting till year end...on second thoughts i should rather buy it now itself coz it has taken a lot to convince my parents and i want to get a new comp before they can change their mind.

Okay, a couple of my friends recently had their rig built for around 22-23k. This is what they got :

AMD Athlon64 3000+

ASUS A8N VM (With GeForce 6100 onboard)

Seagate 160GB HDD

512mb Transcend RAM

Intex Cabinet (No idea about the PSU, Intex 400w I guess)

LiteON DVD Writer

Samsung 17" CRT Monitor

Since you dont really need a monitor, you should be saving around 5k and you can invest that to get another 512mb stick of RAM and get a better cabby+psu OR get a GeForce 7300GS for 4.5k.

AMD X2 - 8.5 K

ASUS A8N VM - 4K approx

Seagate 160GB HDD - 4K approx

512mb x 2 Transcend RAM - 4K approx

DVD Writer - 2.5K

Total = 23K

Rest 2K for ur PSU + cabbie

Sell ur old parts and buy whatever graphics card that comes in that amt.

i am considering buying the AMD Opteron 146+ASUS SLI-Dlx mobo from appollyn...which will add up to 11k.
then i will hv 14k left for the rest of components mentioned above...but the mobo doesnt hv onboard video...so i'll hv to get a gfx card.
now,i hv a PCI-based Geforce 5200 128MB card lying around...so i could use that, but performance would be worse than any most mobos with onboard graphics, wouldnt it?
tso pls suggest appropriate components for the requirements(except mobo, proccy) given above+add a gfx card, with approx pricing totally 14k(if possible) OR suggest an entire configuration for 25k.

1. E6300 + Asrock 775Twins mobo = 14K

2.160GB(atleast) HDD = 3.5K

3.512 x 2 Transcend DDR 2 = 4 K

4.cabinet with 400W SMPS = 2K

5 DVD writer LG H10 something = 2.2K

Total = 25K ( should be around that if u get exact rates at ur place )

And finally get some quotations and post the prices here.

Amd x2 3800+ =8k(wait for 2 weeks prices are going to drop to 8k or even more)
a8n-vm(onboard gfx)=3.7k
2x512mb ddr3200 transcend=4.2k
seagate baracudda 160 gb =3k
Vip cabinet+powersafe 400w=2k
benq 1650 dvd-rw=2k
Total=22,900.:clap:

@Josh...u mean i can actually squeeze in a Core2Duo setup at this budget...then perhaps should i wait a month or two for that proccy to be more easily available???

actually u can cut on things like the DVD writer ... u can save cash there...think whether u REALLY need a DVD writer...or u can get a smaller capacity HDD and a dvd writer (so that back ups on a DVD is possible)...compromise on some ends and ur C2D setup wont be too far away :) try gettin RAM early coz DDR prices are rising ... and u CANNOT use DDR memory on any other C2D board other than the asrock 775dual....

wait for abt 2-6 weeks (if u have to ) for the prices to come at the following levels:

AMD X2 3800-7.5 to 8K

A cheap so so 939 mobo from Asrock or Biostar or Foxconn for abt 3-3.5K

Seagate 160 gb SATA- 3.5k

PSU powersafe 450 W- 2k

Cabby- 1k

Liteon DVD writer-2.5K

Transcend 512*2 DDR 400- 1 gb for 4k

Nvidia 7300gs- 4.5K

Total- 28.5 K

Sell off your old stuff and you will get about 3.5-5K

And so ur rig will easily fit in the 25K mark

went to a few shops and got the following prices:

proccy:
AMD Antlon64(939 pin) 3000+(4.3k)
3200+(5.3k)
3500+(6.3k)
AMD X2 3800(9.5k)
didnt bother abt intel proccy's and Core2Duo still not available.

mobo:
ASUS A8N-VM(4.5k)...no one seems to keep any other mobo for AMD proccy.

512MB DDR400 RAM
160GB SATA HDD
LG H10N DVD-writer
cabinet+400W SMPS
2.1 speakers...totalling to approx 12.5k

now ASUS mobo+above components comes to 17k...meaning i hv 8k left for proccy...which i am willing to stretch to 11k.
now i hv a few questions(before that pls read my usage for this PC as given in the 1st thread):
1.is it worth waiting for Conroe considering my budget and requirements?
2.should i get the X2 3800 and use onboard graphics OR get one of the
Antlon64 proccy + a budget graphics card?(if this option, which proccy and gfx card)
3.how much RAM will be OK for my needs?
4.how many Watts(min) SMPS do i need?

any other configs or suggestions are welcome!

also, how much RAM is required to run Vista smoothly...with DDR prices sky-rocketting,would it be more sensible to get a PentiumD and DDR2 RAM for my requirements???
also, will i need to get a directx 10 gfx card later to run games in Vista...so i neednt get a gfx card immediately???
u see... i need to use my 25k budget very carefully.
will someone please help me with these questions and the ones above also.

c2d 6300 + Asus p5ld2 vm se mobo = 15-16K
120GB = 3K (more than enuf if u have a dvdrw)
1gig DDR 2 = 4K
cabinet with 400W powersafe = 2K
lg dvdrw = 2K
comes to 27k....u can use the onboard video till u get a better gfx card,
makes no sense going for the a64 now....n the x2 is not available in pune

the X2 3800+ was available at one of the shops i went...for 9.5k
the only reason i was thinking of Anthlon64 line was because of my low budget and not-so-intensive usage...

another question-does the processor affect internet speed in any way?

considering my not so intensive usage(i dont need a super-fast CPU) and budget,i have decided to go in for the following configuration:
AMD Antlon64 3000+(4.3k)
ASUS A8N-VM mobo(4.3k)
256MB DDR400 Transcend RAM(1.3k) + will use present 256MB RAM=512MB
80 GB SATA Seagate HDD(2.2k) + present 40GB Samsung = 120GB
cabby + VIP 400W SMPS (2.5k)
will use old LG CD-writer
Total cost=14.6k

i'll save 10k,which i intend to use to get a DVD-writer and a DirectX 10 graphics card:) ...maybe after a year.

i am only wondering if i should buy more RAM and keep now,to later run Vista smoothly, coz DDR prices seem to be sky-rocketing:huh:

btw, parents have agreed to let me upgrade after a couple of years(considering i hv kept costs down now)...by then core2duo prices would hv fallen(coz something faster would hv come into the market) and i could get one then.

pls TE members, dont get angry :cool2: after hearing this...
