Router Problem

Hi Everyone,
My neighbour got this secondhand Netgear WGT624 ver 3 wireless router from someone, problem is router's wireless light is not ON and we can't get into admin interface by login into 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1, although we can ping it on 192.168.1.1 if we manually set on computer, We also connected this router with other router through ethernet port and can access the admin interface of other router, that means this router is not dead.

if we don't set it manually then router ip address is 196.254.2.189 and subnet is 255.255.0.0 and we can ping on it, we have done the reset also but it won't change to default setting.
So the question is can we get into admin interface if yes then how?? if not then Can we revive this router??

How are u connecting to the router ???

A. Wired or Wireless

B. Static IP Or DHCP [On the PC side]

If its dynamic go to Command prompt of the pc to which the router is connected [doesn't matter wire or wireless]. Type ipconfig /all

search for DHCP server ip in the output. Type the same ip in your web browser.........

Thanks for your quick response.

Router is connected through ethernet wire, there is no light on wireless icon, so wireless is out of question(i think).

I have done that with static ip and as well as DHCP IP(196.254.2.189 with subnet 255.255.0.0) through ipconfig /all command, i can get ping on both ways(static ip as well as dynamic ip) but i am not able to open the admin page in browser.

I guess router is still breathing, what you all think?

Hard-reset the router for about a minute. Make sure that your PC is hard-wired to the router. After that, give your PC a static IP of 192.168.1.10 and try to ping 192.168.1.1 If you get replies, try to open 192.168.1.1 through your browser. Use IE or Firefox. IE is the safest best.

The IP you get when you set it to dynamic, 169.254.2.189, is an autoconfig IP. It means that the router isn't giving out any IP when the PC tries to get an IP from the router.

..... although we can ping it on 192.168.1.1 if we manually set on computer,

not able to get this part

We also connected this router with other router through ethernet port and can access the admin interface of other router, that means this router is not dead.

Do you mean that you connected the routers in series and accessed the second router using its IP?

So the question is can we get into admin interface

Are you able to get the login prompt for the interface. Is it giving a password error while trying to login. Which username/password are you trying ?

May be you can try admin/admin or admin/password

Screenshots may help :cool2:

Hi,
First i clear the confusion if there is any.

1. There is no light on router's wireless icon.
2. Router if it is DHCP enabled then gives ip address of 169.254.5.195(sorry about typo in the above given ip), even if i reset hard for 1 min with cord attached to laptop it still gives the same ip in DHCP mode.I able to ping on the specified ip but nothing is opening in browser.

Problem is i can't get to admin page, there is no admin interface.

Yes when two routers connected i n series and i able to get the admin page of other router.
let me know if still there is confusion.

When you're pinging 169.254.5.195, you're just pinging yourself, that is, the PC you're working on. That's the same thing you're doing when you ping 192.168.1.10 Chances are the router might be shot. Is the power light blinking or solid? When you reset the router, you've left the power cord plugged in, right?? Try resetting it again for more than a minute. Also, when you give the PC a static IP, change the card speed on the computer to 10Mbps Half Duplex.

ok Buddy,

Try to restore the factory default configuration of your router

To restore the factory default configuration settings, you must use

the Default Reset button on the rear panel of the router.

1. Press and hold [10-30 seconds] the Default Reset button until the Test LED turns on.

2. Release the Default Reset button and wait for the router to reboot.

3. Type this in your web browser

http://192.168.1.1

When prompted for username & password Use the following credentials

Username :- admin

password :- password

Hope this helps

Strange! default gateway missing. Going by thumb rule in this case default gateway should be 169.254.0.1. Try to ping 169.254.0.1 and post the response here.

Here you are trying to reach yourself and success is pretty obvious unless your TCP/IP stack fails.

3 When static ip is given to pc

IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.10

Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1

It may be a general case that 192.168.1.x is the IP series used by broadband router, but it's not hard written anywhere. So assigning 192.168.1.1 make no sense unless it's documented for your model.

So set ur system DHCP enabled and try to ping 169.254.0.1

169.254.x.x is an IP address generated by a PC when it is unable to receive an IP from a DHCP server on the network. It's known as an Automatic Private IP Address. That's why, in the screens posted, it says Autoconfiguration IP Address instead of saying IP Address as it normally does. And there's no SOHO router, from Netgear, Linksys or anyone else for that matter, that would give out an IP address, a subnet mask, but no default gateway. The default IP of most of these router usually is 192.168.1.1 In some cases, it could also be 192.168.0.1 In no case would it ever be 169.254.0.1

The TCP/IP Guide - DHCP Autoconfiguration / Automatic Private IP Addressing (APIPA)

@ ind13n: You could also try assigning a static IP of 192.168.0.10 and try pinging 192.168.0.1

Hi guys,

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

Me and my neighbour had done everything, infact we even asked from netgear through there email support but still no result, infact my neighbour was so pissed off with the router that he broke the router with hammer. so i guess now the problem is solved, no router no problem.

Whoa. Hammer time. Your neighbour has touched the zenith of troubleshooting. I was gonna ask if your router supports ZeroConf (or has a Bonjour sticker on it). Too late I guess.
