Hi

Should i do any routine maintenance on my Graphic card ?

There is no problem with the card or the temps but I just wanted to know if i should plan any routine maintenance for the same

Idle 50C Under load 60-63C (Checked with log in GPU-Z while playing Crysis)

My Cabinet is quite dusty & I have a Palit dual Sonic 4870

The card is still under warranty.

Thanks for advising

Yes, you should.

You can do two things.

1. A basic clean up / over haul. Which would mean, taking the accelerator out of the dock, and just dusting it free. Make sure you do not touch the gold strip. You can blow really hard into the fan and grills, to remove the dust.

2. Open up the whole shroud / clean it out properly. RE-TIM and put it all back together.

Number 2 is the best and includes (1), but you have to be sure of what you are doing.

Does Option 2 void the warranty ?

Any good youtube link available for the same ?

I am a newbie & would be opening up a GPU 1st time although i have assembled my own System so i know how to apply Thermal paste etc.

^^

I think that sticker would need to be removed. The shroud would not come off. At least it did not for my HD4890s. I had removed all the back plate screws but the shroud remained intact. Also since the OP is doing spring cleaning, would not a re-TIM be part of the itinerary...?

^Yeah, the stock goop would have to be removed but I think the heatsink can be removed without tampering the sticker.

^^
Could be. But if it is standard HSF/shroud fitment, it would be like this. The HSF which is embedded within the shroud would be bound down by the 4x screws on the backplate covered by the warranty sticker. If the OP, can safely remove it he should be fine.

Its like this:

The shroud will not lift off, till the 4x HSF screws are not removed.

unless you have stickers stuck over any of the screws that you need to unscrew to remove the assembly your warranty should not be void for removing and re timing the card... i have not seen any such screws in the 4850 which i owned before or on the 5850 which i own now ... which has screws with stickers on them... the one problem though is that you need very good(small one) screw driver to remove the last 4 screws on my 5850.

I also find it simpler to clean the fan with a paint brush then using a vacuum cleaner(something i picked from spectre). Its able to reach all the places on the fan and removes the sticky dust which doesnt come of easily.

I have read in some posts that the stock TIM in these cards is shit

As members use these cards over a period of several years by changing hands, I wanted that there should be more awareness on this subject on what to do & not what to do.

There is very little authentic information available from the Gurus on this subject

So from what i gather, If the assembly can be removed without voiding the warranty, then the Chip should preferably be retimmed

Else at least the fans should be cleaned at regular intervals with a brush & good blast of air.

Am I missing anything ?

None AFAICS. :)

Use cotton swabs dipped in iso-propyl alcohol (IPA in short) to remove the goop stuck on the GPU's core, VRM's, memory chips and the heatsinks.

You have a Palit card so ensure you don't tamper the sticker at the back of the card stuck with the X-retention plate. :)

Good luck!

Bikey, and Harshal clean the gold plated connectors with Vaseline. I am unsure of the pro's of this, but am sure there is no harm done :)

Why only GPU, u shuld do maintenance for entire machine. Dust causes more heating to electronic components specially capacitors as they block heat emission, you shuld use blower/vacuum cleaner regularly. And regarding maintenance of ur GPU, pro TE members have already shown how to.

Why not get a nice blower and blow it up and out that dust ;)

Simple, hassle free and you dont need to be feared of any ptoblems!!
