The PlayStation 3 is currently half the price it was when it first launched in 2006. However, it might be due for another cost cut...

With the Next Generation Portable and the Nintendo 3DS on the horizon, it might be possible to see the PS3 drop in price before the year is out. PS3 sales have been popping up at various retailers, including Amazon, and UK retailer Tesco appears to be selling the PS3 Slim for less than £200. And apparently, this isn't just a coincidence; it's all pointing towards a price drop: according to an unnamed source, Sony is preparing a "massive price drop on all the official slim PlayStation 3 SKUs when the 3DS releases." This same source said the NGP would have a price tag of £250 in the UK, which isn't out of the realm of possibility. This European source may or may not be correct but we wouldn't be surprised to see a $50 price drop when the holidays roll around again. And according to this, it might even go into effect sooner.

Many will claim the PS3 is quite a decent deal for $299 but then again, the lower the price, the more accessible it becomes.

amazon uk selling for 196 pounds, its like 13.5k for a new 160gb ps3. pretty nice. (Sony PlayStation 3 Slim Console (160 GB Model): Amazon.co.uk: PC & Video Games)

BTW guys price will only drop in india if it drops for the whole of europe.

Sony should even think about reducing the prices on the games section too. With both price cuts, Sony will surely get more consumers and would eventually stop crying over piracy.

i'm all for price cuts, can't disagree.

The life cycle:

Profit on PS3 h/w-->Jail Break--->Price cut

Wait for amazon.com and the likes to leak few of their new boards with price cut mentioned.

Amazon UK has already decreased the price a LOT.

From £255.30 to £196.00

I'm sure they're doing this to clear the older stock.

well, contiune selling PS3 at 249$ ish... please sell games at 39$ max
59$ is too much for games, especially when they make a billion $$

Another price drop in the works? Nice! Sony sure knows how to lure more customers despite the hack.

Must be the kind of news Aman is waiting for. :P

Half the price from it's launch days? Seriously? :O

If the price drop occurs, I think the price drop has come late. I was expecting the price to drop last year. The PS3 hardware is outdated, hence the components are cheaper and PS3 slim is making profits from day 1, it only makes sense that price drop should have occur early. Sony would have edged out Xbox 360 very early. I think Sony was banking too much on Move to ship the PS3s. Now the price drop by Sony will appear like damage control to PS3 jailbreak.

What is the current rate of PS3 ? i think the price drop (if real) is not yet applied in india (or might be anywhere)

Price drop hasn't happened yet, its just a rumour.

Price of 160 GB - 18,399 (Sony PS3 160GB (Black): Flipkart Game Console)

Price of 320 GB - 20,599 [way better deal as Motor Storm Pacific Rift and Resistance 2 are free] (Sony PS3 320GB (Black): Flipkart Game Console)

WTF?

Sony Developing Hack-Proof PS3?

Price reduction on older models may also be incoming.

Sony is currently working on a 'hack-proof' PlayStation 3 as a counter-measure against recent piracy concerns, according to EverythingHQ.

An anonymous 'insider' source says, "Sony are already deep into plans of developing a hack-proof PS3 system. This is mainly due to the recent leaks of Killzone 3 which has worried Sony of their console becoming a mainstream threat to piracy."

The new model PS3 will reportedly have the current slim design, a 300GB hard drive, an undisclosed anti-hacking system, and a mooted price point of £186.99/$300.

Current models of the PS3 could also see a price cut as Sony hopes to clear out the old hackable models from retailers to make way for the new console.

A release date has yet to be set for the new as-yet-unconfirmed model as Sony will be looking to resolve its court case against PS3 hacker George Hotz before making a final decision.
