Running PS2 Games off HDD (Slim Model)

Thanks for everyone for your replies.Much appreciated. The only reason I wanted to head on into this venture was mainly due to the fact that it saved DVD swaps.I don't know about the rest but,I,for one feel that the new Slim models top loading system is a piece of crap. For some reason loading the DVD & balancing them properly in that slot is very dodgy act.Plus the Lens is dangerously exposed on the top.Anyway keeping that aside I thought the HDD method would be a very simple task but turns out this is quite a rollercoaster ride & needs a lot of trial & error to get it to work.:S

@Xander: I will call you as soon as I get time.Kevin, though updated me with your convos.;) I see you got Ratchet Deadlocked.I need that & a few other titles mate.Very low on stock for PS2 games.:(

Dude, don't give false info, the bolded sentence is crap. You just need an HD loader, an HDD and any modded PS2 will do, don't mislead anyone mate.

Errr, yea that was crap about the mod chip... And Errr, any PS2??? Ill give you my PS2 Slim, which is V14 and will give you how much ever you want, can you add a HDD to it?

I mean for gods sake. Those newer slim's DONT i repeat DONT HAVE A CONNECTOR FOR THE HARD DISK. Only a USB disk is an option (external / pen drive you make the choice). Im just saying that it is not impossible. ITS TIME CONSUMING + Dissapointments ahead. USBAdvance / Extreme is just CRAP. PERIOD!

And yes the PS2 CAN read cdrw's. Im going to go ahead and say yes it can read the DVDRW too, but i havent confirmed this personally. But if im not mistaken this increases the wear and tear on the PS2 lens.

And let me reiterate, get a green sony dvd, burn what ever you want to burn on a speed of 2x or 4x. And post your results back here. Hope fully your burner can burn it at that speed. IF mine can im sure yours can too. Im using a Lite On 16X bought it a year back.

Hmm. I just know that when we took my friends Slim PS2 to the guy who initially modchipped it(when the lens died), he said it'll cost us 1.2k to get the lens fixed or 4k + a HDD and he'll set it up to run games off the HDD. I assumed he would know what he was talking about. So apologies if any bodily harm was the result of well meaning (but maybe misinformed as suggested) advise. :P

A broken Lens will cost around 2-3k afaik......

A broken lens supporter will cost around 1k......

my Lens hasnt broken.....but the supporter for the lens broke....I got it fixed for 1k last year :)

2k - 3k,
I don't think so,
the shop i buy from charges Rs 700 for a bad company lens, 1000 for an average one, and 1400 for a good one

I mentioned that I did it last year......since then I havent been out there to buy/repair my phat PS2 :)

Me thinking of getting a new ps2 , which will have the latest "scph"

So all i want to ask is will i be able to play divx and xvid movies of a usb hdd.

USB HDD is a real tricky affair. If you are looking to play it from Divx DVD's then there are bootable DVD's with software like SMS player or PS2 reality media player which might be able to pull this off. You'll have to go through a lot of trial & error method for the HDD thingy to work out.

Yes it would. You need to boot it off the media player DVD first then once on it's main screen remove the CD with the PS2 turned on & just pop in your Divx DVD & hit play.It should read the disc contents & play it off instantly.I tried out the PS2 reality media player but that could only play my MP3's & some .jpg files.Divx didn't properly work out.Need to give it another shot though.;)

EDIT: Here's a guide I found on ThinkDigit forum.I will give it a shot myself later on.But not too keen on it as I have a stand alone Divx Player.

Play DivX/Xvid/MP3 on your Playstation 2. - Digit Forum
