In a historic event, a five-member jury set up to finalise symbol for the rupee is said to have selected the design presented by IIT-ian D Udaya Kumar.

The jury has recommended the design to the Cabinet for approval, which is likely to take a decision in this matter soon.

Just saw the interview of the Creator.

He considered two things:

1) The letter 'Ra' of devnaagri script. Unique to our Country.

If you remove the lower horizontal line you would see it.

2) Added the second line as the two lines sort of represent the two extreme bands of the Indian National Flag.

Re: Rupee Symbol Selected!

Re: Rupee Symbol Selected!

nice!!! is this symbol available for download? can it be integrated into the character map?

Happy to know they finally select after 60 yrs of independence. :)

Very attractive if they Print same on Currency (at least on paper currency/plastic currency/Credit Cards etc) using Tri Color :)

Symbol Has been Approved

I dont get the fixation with the twin lines. Everybody seems to have it.

But Glad that the Indian Currency will have a recognizable symbol now.

IMHO was the best among the available 5 options, love it!

The similarity to one of the characters in the "Devanagri" script makes it even more better :D.

It looks nothing special. Looks like a hindi character written by 4 year old.

Yeah, but how easy & cheap is it to reproduce everywhere, in print & electronic format and be understood ?

..that's where the brains comes in :|

An Indian can relate it to rupee much easier than an American can relate an S with a vertical slash to dollar. :) My own submission involved a small letter r with a horizontal slash the main difference being that this guy choose the Devanagari "ra".

As for reproducing it in print and electronic media, its as simple as for any other currency symbol. You would still need to use special fonts with the glyph in the PUA before the Unicode consortium assigns a free code point for the same and the glyph becomes part of the Unicode standard.

My first impression was:

Looks like the Delhi Metro Sign -- with the 2 horizontal lines, and the circle has been off set. Kept thinking where have I seen this before, then related it to Delhi Metro. Though when I read about it, I saw the novelty of Roman and Hindi "r" sounds together.

So you like the chosen design then ?

I had a feeling they would go for an indigenous script over a foreign one.

Simplified as opposed to the accented "ru".

Will we ever get to know WHY this entry was picked over the others. Somebody mentioned there were better looking entries but did not see any in the links provided so far.

After the explanation i can relate to it and appreciate it as well.

He removed the loop from 'Ra' and adjusted the upper line's length.

I think this now comes closest to Internationalized version of Ra which would be easier to accept.

Maybe not the most creative, but Thumbs up for the design now. :cool2:
