President Pratibha Patil has approved the Rajya Sabha nomination recommendation for cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Sachin Tendulkar accepted the Rajya Sabha nomination proposed by the Congress and became the first active sportsperson and cricketer to have been nominated to the Rajya Sabha.

The Home Ministry had recommended four names including those of Tendulkar, Bollywood actress Rekha and industrialist Anu Agha for the Rajya Sabha. The President has also approved the recommendations for Rekha and Agha.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had written a letter to the Home Ministry on the issue. The Congress had offered to nominate Tendulkar under the President's quota.

The cricketer who just turned 39 on April 24 is yet to retire from international cricket, and is expected to be away on cricket duty through 2013.

The 39-year-old master blaster who has brought many a laurel to the country through his exploits in the game, and Rekha, known for her brilliant and emotional portrayals in Hindi cinema in the 80s, will become members of Parliament under a provision of the Constitution that allows the President to nominate 12 members to the Upper House.

Article 80 of the Constitution provides for nomination of persons having special knowledge or practical experience in matters such as literature, science, art and social service.

57-year-old Rekha was one of the top heroines of the 80s in Hindi films and had won several national awards in her acting career.

Tendulkar's nomination to Rajya Sabha came as a surprise against the backdrop of a long-standing demand for conferring of Bharat Ratna on him for his contribution to the game. He completed the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries in March this year.

Tendulkar along with his wife Anjali met Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi.

Although officially the Congress said that Sonia wanted to meet Tendulkar and personally congratulate him on achieving the historic achievement of scoring 100 international centuries, but sources say the main agenda was his nomination for the Rajya Sabha.

The move to nominate Tendulkar was welcomed from every quarter of the political spectrum, from the Congress to the BJP.

Reacting to the reports of Sachin Tendulkar's proposed nomination, BJP leader Najma Heptulla said, "We are very happy that Tendulkar's name has been proposed for the Rajya Sabha."

"Tendulkar is a great player, we are proud of him. If he is being nominated, surely he would devote some time to Parliament," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

However, the proposal didn't go well with people from the cricket fraternity. Cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle said, "I don't think it is the greatest idea. He doesn't have the experience of governing or doing social work. People are trying to gain mileage out of Tendulkar."

Meanwhile, the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) welcomed the government's nomination of Tendulkar as a member of the Rajya Sabha, saying that the iconic batsman deserves such an honour.

BCCI Chief Administrative Officer Prof. Ratnakar Shetty said that the Board was happy with the government's move. "We (BCCI) are happy that Tendulkar's services as a sportsperson has been recognised. He's been a true ambassador for the country and he deserves it," he said.

In the past, eminent personalities like directors Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and playback singer Lata Mangeshkar had been the nominated members of the Rajya Sabha.

If he would be like Hema Malini, there would be a motion from him asking that govt should ask everyone to drink Boost and whatever else he endorses !

First he ll be asked for a nutritional and calorie wise break up of boost.

Then he ll be bombed with question about eggs, followed by intricacies of insurance policy he promotes.

Seriously, what's he thinking with such a step ?? He is still playing.. concentrate on that. Seems like his interest is waning a bit. He was seen with his son @ the nets in Australia and we all know how prolific he was in that. Only thing positive will be that instead of stealing a single, he just might hit thackreys for a six and give them the reply they have been denied.

Isn't all MPs required to attend the parliamentary sessions? If yes, will he be leaving the scheduled matches inorder to attend these sessions?

It's just a move to distract the blind followers on sachin (read almost entire sachin) from the bofors issue. Congress plays these well. Most populism measures and cleverly timed.. This is too..

Country**

This reminds me of how a baby not letting go of a (somebody else's) toy is tempted with another toy and baby lets go for the new toy.

Anyway, this the best thing that can happen to Cricket. He was a great cricketer in his day no doubt, but there comes a time when any great player has to quit they better do so with dignity rather than keep on till the respect of the people is completely lost. Sachin is way past his time to quit.

We still dont have players who can play consistently. He ll still get a place based on merit .. maybe not in the top 2 names on the list, but def top 5.

But i agree that with this foray of MP's post.. i think he has dented his image a bit.

Another Wanna be Corruptionist.! Sick Guy!

Sick??

He prolly is one of the most respected and full of integrity. During the time of Azhar's captaincy, when match fixing came up.. he remained untouched.

Also he has conducted himself with utmost decorum. Never talking or getting media attention on Apnalaya. Ditto with his personal life or regarding those sleazeball IPL parties.

If anything, he just might bring in some good luck and hope if he enters politics. Dont know from where did u got your views from.

I only dislike his desire to get the Bharat Ratna.

If its not for his category.. it simply is not. Speaking to media and hinting in an obvious manner.. after witnessing so many years in Indian cricket and prolly be aware what his comments can rile up.. he really shouldnt have spoken about it in the slightest.
