For more than two decades, Sachin Tendulkar carefully cultivated an image as a cricketer and a gentleman. After he sold a Ferrari supercar that he received as a gift, he is being viewed by many as just a cricketer. "When Sachin got his Ferrari as a 'gift', he wanted duty & excise exemption; now that he has sold it will he ask for capital gains exemption?" wrote Tushar Gandhi, great-greatgrandson of Mahatma Gandhi, on social networking site Twitter.

Tendulkar acquired the Ferrari 360 Modena in controversial circumstances in 2002. Fiat, the Italian owner of Ferrari, gifted the car to the cricketer, its brand ambassador, when he equalled the record of 29 Test centuries by Australian legend Don Bradman. When the government tried to exempt Tendulkar from paying import duty of Rs 1.1 crore (120% the value of the car), there was fury. Finally, Fiat agreed to pony up the cash.

For a person who is regarded as the finest batsman of his generation and venerated by millions of Indians, the reaction on social networking sites to news that he sold a gift horse was scathing, almost contemptuous. "Want to sell something that you received as a gift & ashamed about it? Take inspiration from Sachin," tweeted Zaki Mulla. Annapakshi Chitra Ramachandran asked why Tendulkar, who was selling a gift, should not donate the money to charity.

Sachin received car from Schumacher

Writer Shobhaa De described Tendulkar as 'The Legend who Sold His Ferrari", an ironic reference to Robin Sharma's novel 'The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari', a book with the message of simple living and high thinking. "Didn't know times were this bad. Poor guy sells his spiffy gift, then gets 25 lakh bank loan 4 flat," De added in her Twitter post.

She was remarking about newspaper reports that Tendulkar, whose earnings over two decades amount to hundreds of crores, has taken a bank loan to buy a tiny apartment on the outskirts of Mumbai. Tendulkar's two-seater sports car was bought by Jayesh Desai, a Surat businessman who is one of the promoters of the Rajhans Group that has interests in textiles, multiplexes and real estate.

The 38-year-old Desai, who is the same age as Tendulkar, already owns a fleet of luxury cars. He told ET that he could have bought a new Ferrari but chose not to do so for sentimental reasons. "This is a special Ferrari 360 Modena because two legends are associated with it."
The car was handed to Tendulkar by Michael Schumacher, the seven-time world Formula One racing champion. Desai declined to talk about his relationship with Tendulkar, how much he paid for the car, or how he bought it. Tendulkar could not be contacted.

Throughout his life in the goldfish bowl, Tendulkar has assiduously avoided controversy. The only time he even came close to it was in 2001, when a match referee accused him of ball tampering during a Test match in South Africa. Now, by selling a costly gift for which he paid no tax, he has slipped, believes a person who goes by the name imnaad on Twitter. "Finally, Sachin made a mistake."

I do not find any ethically wrong with what he has done. What the hell is supposed to do with the Ferrari? He can never drive it with his family as he will surely get mobbed. Heck, he cannot even spend a quite evening watching the sunset with his kids on the beach!

i think a mountain is being made out of a Molehill

trust Sobhaa De to jump for 3 minutes of twitter fame

It's his freakin Ferrari... let the man do what he wants with it!! Sachin remains Sachin, Ferrari or no Ferrari, period.

Bottom line - rich gets richer (saving taxes), poor get poorer, and middle class man gets burdened with paying all the taxes.

Have to hand it to these celebrities though. They have the best of both worlds. they can crib and get exemption on many things. The common man even if he goes on fast onto death will get a Rs50 hike in lpg price + sales tax + petrol/diesel hike + commodity price hike etc.

Money is not everything in life..

Fame and dignity also stands in a human personality

He sold his Ferrari coz he couldn't afford the low mileage coupled with the rising Petrol prices...

Duh... Who cares!! :P

Obviously, he has a new supercar. He is Sachin Tendulkar! He won't be driving an outdated decade old car, when noobies around him are roaring in their Lambos and stuff.
And regarding the Home Loan of 25L, I'm sure it has something to do with taxes (He could be currently low on white-cash-in-hand) and not his buying powah. He's still uber rich.
