To,

All Samsung Galaxy Spica Users & all Others who are willing to support this 'Poor Man's Android Phone'.....!!!

:)

I found this petition for Updating the Galaxy Spica to Android 2.2 Froyo. Please sign it & show your concern.

To: Samsung

We would like Samsung to update the Galaxy SPICA/Lite/Portal phone (also known as i5700) to Android 2.2 as we feel that the device is fully capable of supporting the features in the new OS and it is still too early to stop supporting the device. Of course, if you (Samsung) are intending to update the phone to 2.2, thank you so much! This is just to preempt any occasion where Samsung announces that it has no plans to update the device.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

Please don't avoid signing just coz u don't have the phone (even I have a Moto Milestone in addition to the Spica); u can always help many others wanting this update.

Thanx a Lot. Three Cheers for U...

Yup.... they would know that an UPDATED Android phone is wanted by the masses.

I really don't think that Google charges anything for the updates. Actually, the phone co. has to spend money, time & energy in making the updated OS available on any platform. That's probably why they tend to avoid doing it for low end phones..... :(

^Yup. That is the problem. Even if the Spica can support it, it is finally in Samsung's hands, not Google's. From what I've seen, it seems like they are phasing out the Spica slowly. I can't find it anywhere in my city and all the dealers tell me that Samsung has stopped production.

If this is true, it looks very bleak for Spica getting Froyo.

Device manufacturers want people to keep buying their new phones.. If they keep providing updates to existing models, new model sales will be poor and their revenue will not grow...

After investing our hard earned money we can only watch helplessly as our phone gets outdated..... sigh!!! that's how the world is..

Had mailed Samsung with a query about Spica availability & production. They replied saying that the 'Spica is currently in production. It is available with all Samsung Authorised Dealers. Kindly contact us if you have any difficulty in procuring a device.'

Dealers want to capitalize on the Android hype & encourage prospective Android buyers to opt for the higher priced Android devices. :(

Well, to be frank, the Cellular phone manufacturers need to be more responsive about update requirements of the customers. This is the only factor where I really appreciate apple.

Firstly, they make nearly bug free phones & secondly, they provide support all through the life cycle of the phones.

:)

Yeah this is sad. But look at the bright side. At least Samsung is not doing firmware checksum to prevent users from installing alternate ROMs. Like Motorola did with some of its Android phones. Alternate ROM ecosystem is doing reasonably well in Samsung phones.

Samsung have only officialy announced that the Galaxy S will get the Froyo upgrade, and its highly unlikely the Spica will get one. Samsung's problem is that they have too many phones, and cant properly support all of them. Besides as others have already mentioned, another reason is that they want to push the sales of newer handsets

Hmmm..... True.

Sadly, same is going to happen with the Galaxy S. I already see Gingerbread coming way too fast. Soon enough, we would have another petition to upgrade the Galaxy S to Gingerbread......!!!

Lolzzz :D

But the Galaxy S being a flagship phone will surely be upgraded to Gingerbread, and it has the hardware requirements(1 ghz processor, 512MB ram, >3.5" screen, etc)

Can't be sure. By that time, there will be another "flagship" phone. With dual core processor, better graphics chip, higher resolution screen, strong camera flash, compact projector (Video: Samsung Show W7900 Projector-Packing Cellphone Actually Looks Pretty Cool) etc.). Samsung is not like Apple / Google to have a few phones and supporting them reasonably well. Even HTC is somewhat in this category.

But Samsung is in the other category of mobile phone manufacturers - Samsung, Nokia, Motorola etc. They launch new phones almost every month. A few stick, most others fade away soon. There is no such thing as "flagship" with such manufacturers.

And by the time Gingerbread comes out, Samsung's Wave platform would have taken off. Or, rather, Samsung would think that it has taken off. So support for Android phones might well go down.

people Leshak released the beta 2.2 firmware. for spica. ........ check samdroidmod forum for details
Yeah..... but I am sure u really don't want to mess around with a beta. :hap5: Thanx for the Heads up though.....

I would prefer to wait for 2 things:

1) Official confirmation from Samsung that they are NOT upgrading Spica to 2.2

&

2) A Stable 2.2 release for the Spica from Leshak

in order to consider upgrading my Spica.
