Guys, I am gonna RMA my HDD soon. It doesn't have any bad sector, but in some area, the read speed decreases quite below the avg. Also I am expecting to get some 250GB in place of my 80GB. :P

So, I need to know their RMA policy and time of service. Suggestions are very welcome on how to convince them that the HDD is defected. :P

all hdd are like this, due to nature of platters, transfer rate pattern is not linear.

IMHO without bad sectors what you plan to do tantamounts to cheating.

Thats difficult to answer :P

So how much space in the partition is occupied and you get this problem?
Is it on one partition or all the partitions ?
What if you have one large partition made up of the complete disk capacity then at what point of the data fill up do you experience this problem ?

So these questions should be expected if you want a replacement.

My experience with Samsung has been good. Immediate replacement. No questions asked if they dont see a physical damage. They will keep the disk for testing, confirm the issue. And if there is at all an issue, you will get the replacement immediately.

^^ thanks for the info. Btw, what do you mean by immediate replacement?? they will give me replacement w/o checking the disk ? :O that will be great unless they call back me to return if they find my 80GB doesn't have any problem.

@axeman,

Well, we are not saints. ;)

I had gone for my cd rw repair they had made an offer where they repair out of warranty items 3 years back. What i saw there was they first format your disk (low level). Check for firmware upgrade and if they find disk faulty they give them for replacement. So i think you would get your get your same hard disk back. But your experience may differ.

Suppose we have a Samsung HDD and no bill, can it still be RMAed if within the supposedly 5 year warranty period ?

Yup, it should be. yesterday when I called the local kolkata Samsung HDD service centre, they asked me to bring the HDD only. They didn't even mention once about the bill. I guess its all about S/No or P/No.

Policy is quite simple and "No Question Asked" sort of thing untill and unles your drive is physically damaged

a) Check you HDD warranty status @ Samsung Warranty Check
b) If warranty is valid, take you drive to service center.
c) They'll let you you a stipulated replacement time.
d) You'll get replacement.

And yes you'll not get 250GB against 80GB, in anycase. :)

Not for all kinds of issue. Issues like the HDD isnt being detected in the BIOS or isnt powering. They will make you wait in the service center for a while. Check it and if thats the case they would replace it same day itself. This had happened with me. So I was kinda impressed with the service.

@ashish k
It was a service center in andheri e donno the actual address i had called their toll free no who referred which
