CHENNAI: Satyam Computers has terminated over 30 employees following internal audit findings that they may have 'fudged' bills after being relocated to Chennai from Hyderabad. These project associates allege foul play by the company. "They have taken bills that are almost one and half years old and are asking for us to prove its validity. Even if we are able to prove that the bills are original and not fudged as they claim, they are unwilling to listen to us," a few associates told The Times of India.

While some are planning to take legal recourse, even as their salaries have been withheld by the company and profiles removed from the company records.

"The company is trying to lay us off giving such trivial reasons. The HR is not even willing to listen to us and we are not even given a chance to resign," an employee said. The bills in question relate to nearly Rs 3,000 incurred by the associates after their transfer last year. The associates insist that they were entitled for this amount and even this was not reimbursed by the company. "We had used packers and movers a year and half back and how can we prove that we used their service?

Satyam management is not willing to listen to us," another employee said.

"They are terminating us because of the meltdown, but are being made scapegoats with such unwarranted reasons. A list of nearly 400 people to be terminated across the country, is being prepared by the company," one of them said. S V Krishnan, Satyam's global head of HR, said this is a 'routine process' of the company, where a separate audit team reviewed bills.

"They might complain that they are being laid off because of the global economic slowdown. But it is never the intent of the company to put people away just to save some amount of money...This is done as part of good governance. The audit is done by an independent body. There were areas with certain bills where doubts over 'potential fraud' arose. For example, two of the associates might have moved their belongings together but might have submitted separate bills as showing they had moved it separately or they might have submitted false bills. We want to be above board on integrity issues."

LOL fake bills for RS 3000 ! For relocation that also

Almost all companies pay a flat sum to an employee for relocation ! What is this thing abt bills nd all , that also for 3k ! Man how low companiesl can go :P.

They law off ppl but CEO still buys new BMW :D

I am not surprised its Satyam. Apparently the word ethics is missing from their dictionary. Ironically thats the reason they are giving for the termination.

I would say its quite pathetic of Satyam to use an excuse like this for laying off employees, destorying those peoples careers just to save itself from the scandal that surrounds a layoff due to market slowdown.

For those who have doubts about the authenticity of the reason stated, This is a standard text book strategy for HR guys and usually used as the very last resort. Usually when people are laid off, they are asked to resign of their own accord so that it does not have an impact on their career. But if someone refuses to resign, standard strategies like this are used to defame the employee and then terminate them on that basis. The excuse can vary form something as simple as employee performance to as big as document fraud.

I know one other company which as done this sort of thing with one of its employees in past, but it was again done as a last resort measure when the employee does not cooperate.

Had Satyam been true in what its stated, it would have registered fruad cases againist the employees with the evidence found the way Wipro has done in past in the events of document faking or other frauds.

Govt should make rules like good old communist china :P

Cap on salaries for dumb CEO, BODs. Let them suffer

Wonder what level in the corporate ladder these poor sobs were before being laid off; I bet it's not the upper management.

NOFM....but IMO lay off one useless BOD members take 10 freshers in that place.... but those never happen :P

They lay off ppl but CEO still buys new BMW
wonder when they will lay off the BMW car owner

I'l tell you guys the worst of the whole drama

Satyam Computers has terminated over 30 employees following internal audit findings that they may have 'fudged' bills after being relocated to Chennai from Hyderabad.

First of all its bills that are from outside the company, not even related to the company directly, and of trivial amounts, NO AUDITOR WOULD CARE ABOUT THIS AMOUNT IN SUCH A BIG FIRM, Its not material..

Secondly, the auditor will have no proof for the same except to go and check with the packers themselves, or send them a notice which if the packers feel like, they can answer..Even that wont be conclusive evidence because of the time that has lapsed..

Lastly the audit trail in this case on which so many people are being kicked off, is perhaps the most unreliable due to time, not directly transacted by the company and few other reasons..

Total shit..haha..Satyam caught with its pants down..

and this thing is as simple as denying the payment or asking the persons to prove their innocence, Innocent until proven guilty..

These must be the hapless people who are good with their jobs and have no connections in mgmt at satyam, these are the kind of people who are usually fired at satyam, whereas the rishtedaars of the mgmt take huge deputations for sitting idle at the client offices :(.

Satyam and ethics. There are two words that don't go together. Even before this incident, they've been known to have the worst company work culture.

The irony in the situation is that the actual fraudsters in mgmt go scot free.

I will never buy a product that Satyam sells(I don't know if they do sell a consumer product but if I did, I would avoid it).
