Scanner needed to scan stamps

Hi guys,

I have decided to sell my stamp collection and I have around 120 varieties. I'll have to scan the front and back side of the stamps.
The last time I scanned something in an internet cafe, it costed me 20Rs for a single scan .
So to scan everything , it would cost me more than 4K (240xRs.20) . I have decided to buy a scanner as this would come to less than 4K.
However I don't want to spend that much on a scanner too.
I'm looking to buy the cheapest flat bed scanner that works too I don't need printer . Just a scanner would be enough.

I came across this on the internet , I have'nt heard about the company and I want some advice.

Since stamps are small in size cant you place 5-10 in one go & scan them at the same time? You will have to edit them into single images later on though.

No mate , most of them are in sheets so I can't do that. Thanks for the suggestion :)
@sankar_45 - Thanks , The cheapest I could get the canon Lide 110 is 3200 Rs . Is the Plustek a good buy for 2500 Rs ? ( I could get 500 off from 2800 if a coupon works) . I see it is mentioned in almost all the sites , so I thought it could be a brand that manufactures scanners alone that I don't know.

PS : Name sake scans are ok as far as quality is concerned. The only thing I'm concerned about is the price and I want the cheapest that won't die after few weeks.

Plustek seems to have dumped this model on Indian sites. There are ads in Quickr and OLX also. I have not been able to find a single review about this scanner on the net. Though they sell other models on Amazon and Newegg this model has never been sold there.

That makes me suspicious. Scanners do go bad. Though the Warranty is there, do they have service centers?

I think it is better to buy the Canon scanner even if it costs more. You will have peace of mind.

Guys ,

I have attached a sample of the scan (front and back) with that of mine taken using my camera. Is there a way to make the photos to look like the scan images?

The 1st two images are scans and the next two are my photos. Is is bad because of the flash?
I know I'm a very bad photographer. Any tips would help.

A local dealer told me Canon Lite 110 is available for 3500rs and a HP scanner for 3900 Rs. I might have to buy it if photos look like this.

i bought canon lite 110 which it has no power required and only one usb that my scanner has in bulit in led and easy to scan with easy button and no need to open software from desktop PC :P and it scan great all perfect no issue
 
An investment of Rs.3500 in a Digital Camera is better than an investment in a scanner. You could always use a camera. But a scanner very rarely.

is better with 12 Megapixels. You could always practice till you get it perfect. It costs nothing.

I was suggesting Canon because of the resale value. If you complete your scanning in a month or so and offer to sell the scanner within the warranty period, you may get a good price. Even in this a camera has better resale value than a scanner.

There is a demand for scanners because the scanner companies like Canon have refused to release Windows 7 drivers for their older models. There is a commercial program for making the older models work. But that software is more expensive than even the high end scanners.

I did face a similar problem recently. I wanted to covert my old photographs to digital images. Since I have the negatives, they could be scanned. The shops charge Rs. 40 per negative. So converting more than 2000 negatives would cost me a fortune. The film scanner costs Rs. 12000. But there is no resale market. So my project is shelved for the time being.:(

I have been looking for a second hand scanner. There are a number of them available on OLX. Try there.

@sankar_45 - Thanks. I have a Samsung ES65 10.2Mp camera. I just need to figure out how to take good pics.

One more thing I just now found out is that most stamps sheets are a bit wider than A4 size which is the max these scanners can scan @ this price range. So I'm dropping the idea to buy a scanner.
