I have an issue with my 320gb 7200.12. The ST3320418AS with firmware CC35.
There were some major power issues in my area on the weekend, and my inverter ran out, resulting in the pc crashing a few times. Later, the hdd would suddenly stop functioning and windows would crash, and on restart the hdd wouldn't detect. A hard reset would bring it back. I should have figured it would fail.
The POST freezes for a few seconds trying to identify the drive unlike an unpowered drive which it just whizzes by. Windows (xp) too takes a long time booting attempting to detect the drive if it's connected and powered. Now it does not detect at all.
I suspect the board has electrical damage, and i have some important documents on it. The 100 odd gb of movies etc is inconsequential. The drive is in warranty. What do you guys suggest? i considered buying a new identical drive and swapping the pcb. i figure a 50% chance it might work.

Get a decent UPS that can shut down your PC whenever there's a power failure (if you leave your PC switched on, un-monitored) . The present scenario can turn out very expensive.

About the purchase of a second drive, why not if the important documents are worth the price of a new drive? At worst you'll be stuck with 2 320GBs and at best, you'll have 2 identical drives (after RMA) for a RAID 1. Instant protection from physical failures.

Hmm, i specifically got this su-kam 800va inverter after checking with people using it, plus a huge 190ah battery, so that i wouldn't have to get a ups. The idea was to keep running the pc through the 3-4hr max load shedding we may have rather than shut down when the power goes. and it's been fine for over 2 years. Last weekend was a freak incident with 24hrs of no power. There were about 3 or 4 power loss incidents in about 12 hours. That's probably how the hdd died. incidentally, it kept the pc plus 2-3 fans running for 6hrs and 45 mins which is impressive in itself. what doesnt impress me is how easily hdds fail when everything else is working fine.

Anyway, trying to get an identical hdd, but the firmware is a bit different. mine has CC35 and i'm getting CC38. Can someone confirm this will work? What i've read up on the web is that differing firmwares may not work.

Went to lamington road today. Only two stores had the same model. But not only was the firmware different, but the PCB version too. So i didn't bother. Went to the seagate service centre. They just said if the HDD isn't working, we'll repair or replace it. Dunno what to do now.
