i have bought a new pc !
it has seagate 500gb 7200rpm hdd !
well i think its kinda slow !
when i transfer data from one drive to another win7 shos an average speed of 8mb/s .
my friend has wd green and he gets around 70mb/s doing the same job !
well is it because i have 8mb cache on 500gb and he has 64mb cache on 1tb !
please help !

Are you transferring files from 1 partition to another of the same drive?? Then its expected to be slow.

I really don't know what to say of such noobish comments being posted here! And you claim that Windows XP and other OSs have superior speed while transferring files compared to Windows 7? Any proofs to backup your claims?

check your HDD for errors, for this use MHDD, this will give you the health of the sectors.

Install the appropriate controller drivers and/ or scan for malware infections. Use HDTune to see if UDMA is enabled. Also use Teracopy for seeing what your actual copy speeds.

im a noob ! dint get a thing :)

Is it a branded pc or assembled one ?. Give the pc config... open programs and features under control panel and state the names of the programs listed with the word "driver"

buddingwhizkid your details are limited on us, this much detail and information is not enough for fixing your issue, detail like-
1.on which HDD you are facing issue?
2. Is OS installed on same HDD or partition? if no then try re-formatting the HDD you are having issue.
and before using any other utilities try finding issue with windows basic tools, and then if not solves then try those utilities which other members suggest like HD tune, Tera copy they are really good. then post the update here what was the result.

What you saying man, i will never agree with this, i am damn sure that their must be some issue with you HDD or driver. i Have 2 WD 320GB in raid and they give a average of 140-145MB/s speed on windows 7 ultimate 64bit.

I just bought a Seagate 500GB 7200.12 SATA HDD yesterday.

I have checked with HD Tune in Windows XP SP3.

Got avg. transfer rate near 90mb/s but its too hot at 42C.

It took near 8min to transfer video files of near 15GB to my new HDD.

So,it is slow or fast or avg.

But no one can guaranty about its reliability.

I could not find any Samsung HDD in Kolkata.....:(

if you are transferring data within the HDD, partitions doesn't matter, Seagate 500 7200.12 is going to be slow
1. It has only 8 MB cache
2. Whole 500Gb is on a single platter .

Your HDD might be working in PIO mode. To check this
1. Press [win]+[R] key
2. type devmgmt.msc
3. expand IDE ATA/ATAPI contollers
4. double click on Primary IDE channel
5. select advanced settings
6. select "DMA if available" in both the drop down menu, also check is the current transfer if it is DMA or PIO

Repeat the above steps for rest of IDE channel and also for the secondary IDE channel
