Hi all..

I recently acquired a 1 TB 7200.11. ST31000340A8.

It was working fine until recently with a frnd of mine's system. Now i got the HDD and connected to my PC. On booting up it makes a clicking noise continuously. From what i heard the HDD is bricked or about to be bricked. Is that correct?

Anything to do other than RMA ???. What is the RAM process of Seagate?

Any help appreciated.

*ooh i am depressed today*

I know really stupid to ask this...

but will they do any data recovery for me?

It makes the sound continously.

It gets detected in BIOS...but not showing on My Computer... if it did i could have backed up the data.

Its a data drive.

AFAIK, Seagate does not offer Data recovery in India. you have to contact third party service providers which is gonna cost you a bomb.

for final check, run SeaTools diagnostic software just to be sure.

its time for RMA ! Seagate Dos recovery services for all brands, but you have to call & send the item to Seagate India office for the same, its highly expensive too !

Even if its not detected in windows, run some data recovery software to check if its detected there... You may be able to get out some data since its not completely dead yet, as its been detected in BIOS...

Any recovery software for HDD not being recognized by the BIOS won't do anything worthy.TIC TIC sound not always leads to dead HDD. How many HDD you are running in same system? Have you tried booting up by reducing SMPS power load and with different set of SATA cables?

Hey,

Have an issue which is a bit related to said topic.

I too am facing this click issue. What happens is some times [regularly] when i read data of my HDD like access a movie or something, the system stalls for about 1-3 seconds and then resumes when I hear a "tick" sound from the HDD.

This does not happen in between a process like a game or anything , but when i start a process .

Is this also suggesting a failure ? Should I backup all data and send for RMA or something ?

I dont have 7200.11 though.

1 x 120 GB + 1 x 500 GB + 1 x 1TB 7200.12 [System]

No the HDD is detected in bios.

Only 2 HDD's now... Earlier also 2 HDD's... so u think that could be a power issue?.

I hadnt time to fiddle around coz i just found out abt it abt 15 mts before i leave for office this morning. will check once i get home... :(

Update:

I just gave a call to Accel in my city. whne asked if my data will be ther..there answer was "No there will not be" "When running seatools, we use the option to remove the data" "how can we say wether the data be there or no"

Before running any diagnostic tools, transfer all the important data to another internal HDD or external HDD

These diagnostic tools put a lot of stress on the drive & if it is on the last leg of its life, use those last moments to transfer the data rather then diagnosing the disk.

I faced the same problem a couple of years back and the 1st thing i did was to transfer the entire important data to a new HDD & then ran these diagnostic tools, but the HDD failed midway & had to be scrapped as it was out of warranty.

If you do not have a additional HDD internal or external available do not boot the HDD, as every booting will be eating away the remaining precious life of the disk.

Arrange for the same & then boot & Only Once the data is safely transferred, do as many experiments you want.

& if the drive is safe then have a party or else also have a chhota party that at least your data is safe.

Mate... did u read the above posts... :(

I instaled seatools and the hdd gt detected. But thd disk is too slow,on tryin to bckup. Abt 800 kb transfer speed. Smart test is pass. Any ideas?

First of all, i assume it's not showing at all in disk management in Device Manager?

You could try connecting it to a friend's PC to rule out the possibility of your system being the culprit.

I feel your pain. I've had half a dozen hdds fail on me in the last year ( not all mine of course). You're slightly better off cos it's still showing in the BIOS. If you don't see it in the BIOS, it's a lot more complicated.

Is the data absolutely priceless/irreplaceable? Then you'll have to bite the bullet and go for professional recovery services. Research and read up before deciding which to go for.

On the other hand, if the data isn't worth pawning off a kidney for, you could try Spinrite. I've used it with favorable results before.

If all else fails, you could try the 'freezer' method where you put your hdd in a ziplock bag, leave it in the freezer overnight , connect it as soon as you take it out and run data recovery software. This should be your last option of course.

But before you do anything, google like mad :)

Good luck, mate !
