hello guys,

owning a seagate freeagent GO 160gb portable USB hdd. I was having some cable issues with my hdd for the past 3 months. The issue is the hdd would get connected and immediately disconnected and it keeps doing so until i adjust / lift the cable in all directions up, down, left , right. And finally i get the pop up window (which we get usually when we connect a pen drive or hdd which has options like explore, open , play media etc etc). This pop up window comes and immediately goes like when we switch off and on any device).

Hope you guys understood what m trying to say...

So finally i got the cable replaced. Now in this new cable also i get the same issue some times . Not very faulty like the old cable though.

From the begining i only connect one end namely POWER + DATA connector alone (which is a thick wire) in my pc ignoring the other end namely DATA (which is a thin wire). But it had been working fine for sometime.

Now my question is do I have to connect both the USB ends to my PC ???
The cable is a Y cable - meaning one end is mini usb which connects to the HDD and the other two ends are USB which connects to the PC ..

Plz reply me guys, as I fear that i have used my HDD in a wrong way so far...

^ you need to use both the ends only if your PC is very old and/or if one usb slot doesnt provide enough power to start a hdd spinning. My friend brought over his freeagent 160gb and it worked fine with a single cable.

Afaik.. you need to use both the cables if the USB port is v1.1

Ill explain exactly what i mean.

When I attach my external drive which also has a Y cable to my keyboard USB ports. It behaves the same way the OP described. But when i attach the 2nd cable, it disconnect for a couple of seconds and then reconnects itself without any more issues.

I dont know if thats something to do with USB v.2 or 1.1. But I dont have to attach the 2nd wire when I attach the drive to the USB ports at the back of the system.

Then could it be a loose conduct issue ?. Because i even tested with my usb card reader cable and it worked fine. Then after getting my replacement cable also i checked immediately and it worked fine. But after sometime when I connected to the pc (through the new cable), when i lift the hdd , (sometimes even if i dont lift ) it disconnects and again reconnects.

Now is this a loose conduct issue ?. Can i RMA my hdd for this reason ?.

Actually i have an idea to wait for a year or two and get a higher capacity hdd in replacement of my current HDD because of this issue. What to do ?

Pour your suggestions guys....
