Getting a internal HDD tomorrow. Am confused b/w the Seagate and the WD.

Getting the Seagate 500GB for Rs. 3050 and the WD for Rs. 3300 from Mahi computers, Pune. Are the prices ok? WD was not available in Karan Solns and BABA and Seagate was for 3100 and 3400 respectively. :(

My 320GB is WD and have faced no problems so far. 3 of my friends had to get their Seagate(s) exchanged due to various reasons. While the peeps having WD faced no problems till now.

Am I just being paranoid or the WD is better?

Get Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS, its faster, 93-94~ mbps, fast random access. Use it for OS and Games, slower drive always for movies, music etc.

@sei, check the seagate hdd carefully before buying, there are lots of sv35/7200.10 series still floating around in the pune market

Personally i have seen many of the seagate 500 fail for no reason whatsoever...:s my pals 500 gb stopped getting detected just after a normal reboot...very strange...IMO i suggest u drop the plans of either the WD / Seagate 500.....Instead spend abt 1k more and get the Seagate 640GB :) real VFM :)

Yeah, that's what bothers me. But right now don't have the moolah for a 640GB. Going to pick up the 1TB next when it comes <5K

So, back to the original question.. Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS or WD 500GB 8MB Buffer?

Go for Seagate 7200.11 ST3500320AS 32Mb buffer at 3100~3200 price.WD 500 with 8Mb is not good option.

For me WD ftw......I really like the ASS of WD.

More contradictions... guess I'm not the only one whose paranoid.

Western Digital come to your house and pick your HDD up and return it to your house. Thats what I call good service.

^ There's no problem about ASS.. The Seagate service center is quite close. And my friends who have got it replaced are satisfied with the new HDDs. I want to know which one to pick up on basis of their performance :(

Why you guys all ways think of RMA ? Even he has yet to enjoy new hard disk. why want everything at home?

Move your ass in unfortunate case of RMA to Seagate service center as OP belongs to Pune.I believe this will take less time then WD too n fro Home pickup service.

Seagate ST3500320AS 32 MB is way faster then WD500 8MB.Yes if you can get WD5002ABYS 16/32MB will be best buy.No way 8MB will do any magic.

Here see some results.

# Western Digital Caviar SE (WD5000AAJS): Performance worst than the majority of drives we tested, probably due to its lower buffer size (8 MB). Don’t buy.

# Western Digital Caviar SE16 (WD5000AAKS): Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 is far faster and costs the same thing. Don’t buy.

# Western Digital RE2 (WD5001ABYS): Lousy performance. Don’t buy.

# Western Digital RE3 (WD5002ABYS): Comes in 16MB/32MB models only. This was the best drive in our review. But since it is targeted to the enterprise market – meaning it has a higher reliability – it costs more. If you are looking for an enterprise-class product, this is the one you should pick. This product is also recommended to regular users that want a higher performance and can pay a little bit more to have the fastest 500 GB drive around.

500 GB Hard Disk Drive Round-Up | Hardware Secrets

Repped! :ohyeah:

Thanks for the above info! Got my exam day after otherwise would have looked harder:ashamed:

My dealer has the 32MB buffer WD also and he's quoting 3950 for that.. too much. Mainly it's going to be a backup/media storage device.

Going to make sure I pick up the Seagate ST3500320AS 32 MB tomorrow.

Thanks!

Sorry for the OT post, Sei, but is this the same place located between MG Road and East Street.

If yes, is it a good dealership?

^ The same place. Yeah he is a good dealer if you make sure that he knows that you are aware of the current prices. Otherwise he will take you for a ride.

Eg. Me and my friends went to pick up loads of stuff from him
http://www.techenclave.com/show-off/some-weekend-shopping-106866.html

When he realised we were in the know-how about prices, he gave us the best in Pune. But later when we were about to leave, my friend suddenly remembered that he had to pick up a spike buster. Mahi gave a quote of 250/- My friend bargained and Mahi relented and gave it for Rs. 230

Now you'll understand what I mean.. When we reached home, my friend checked the MRP on the box, it said Rs. 225!!! :bleh:

Though later when my friend went he gave him a discount laughing about the incident.

I thought so. He quoted me Rs 4650 for a CM 690 w/o transparent panel. Had to check out other places so didn't exactly argue with him.

Good to know that he does give you good prices tho. Some dealers will continue to quote inflated prices no matter what.

Thanks Sei, and the convo in your link made me chuckle.

Update: Got the Seagate ST3500320AS 32 MB Buffer for Rs. 3300/- today evening from Karan Solutions, East Street. :hap2:
