I was looking around on eBay & found few links from our very own DVDstoredelhi... All his listings have the warranty term reduced to 2 years for Seagate Barracuda 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 5900RPM 64MB Cache Desktop Hard Drive from earlier 3 years... I've sent a mail to him for confirmation from his end...

Any dealers here who would be kind enough to confirm this...

Is this another reduction from Seagate to cut RMA costs... If it is then its a sad thing to do given these HDD's are sold much more than the regular WD's... they are pretty awesome HDD's for dumping your ever increasing data...

^.. So I guess its true then... Damn Seagate... :@

I think its only for Barracuda Green or are other series also affected... (7200.12)

UPDATE: Seagate sent along this statement Friday afternoon: "Retail purchased internal drive kits for desktop (Barracuda) and laptop (Momentus) are not affected by this warranty change. Anyone that purchase an internal kit for personal use still has a 5-year warranty attached to the drive."

We then asked Seagate what drives will actually get the warranty reduction. "The warranty affects only the channel drives that are sold through distributors, which is usually in bulk," a rep told us. "All our internal drives carry the same product names, so it is understandable that someone might have seen this communication and mistook it as meaning the retail boxed kits as well."

The irony is ALL seagate drives sold in India are OEM/non-retail which would be affected:@

^.. I guess even if Seagate is faster people should now prefer WD... saving a few bucks & getting one whole year warranty extra...

I just hope they improve RMA process & does not follow Seagate, reducing warranties on their HDD's & such would be hopeless.. This is a chance for WD to increase sales... Most of these high capacity drives are for data dumps anyway.... .

If Seagate has done it so will WD too in some time. Sad news

At least right now its 3 years for WD... Therefore those of us who are going to buy new HDD's should now be getting WD instead till they level the field with 2 years warranty as well...

Damn this sucks!! I had bought a Seagate 2TB a couple of weeks ago. I had checked the warranty the other day and noticed it was 2 years. I thought that was a mistake and was going to get it fixed.

Hey, not fair. Had spoken to the Seagate rep 1.5 months back, did not mention any of this at all. BTW should be getting back my RMAd drive back this week, will ask Accel this.

Also, are the external HDD's affected by this? Since i am planning to get one for my router.

Well checked mine, and it says 2 yrs only, bought on 15th September, now its time to kick some ass guys, lets bombard seagate with mails and all.

Will be taking this up with Prime, and asking them to talk to seagate about this. All seagate HDD recommendations are out of the windows now from me.

^^ Nothing will happen . Its 2 years for OEM drives from Aug 2011 and stay like that. It was 5 years before and bought down to 3 years.Best way is STOP Buying Seagate and switch to WD :P

Really, and without prior intimation, how are we supposed to know this? At the very least, some kind of announcement, maybe an email, considering i have subscribed to their email service since i had registered my product with them. The only saving grace seems to be that drive sent for RMA was bought in June.

But yes, its time now for WD only.

Switching to WD is a very sensible option right now & also to let Seagate know why consumers are leaving them... It may or may not change the warranty policy but it will give them something to think over..

If I am right few years ago Seagate moved from 5 yrs to 3 yrs & after some resistance they again increased the warranty to 5 years albeit for a short time until WD had problems with their 1.5TB drives...at which point seagate implemented the now defunct 3 yrs warranty all together..

REALLY, I did not know that. So the disk we purchased in that plastic box are OEM disks.(As I understand it; OEM disk should be sold by PC manufacturer like Dell, HP etc)

Isn't it.

Seagate Cutting Warranty Lifespan to Cut Costs ?

So,they gonna sell 2TB HDD @3K from now ? :S

Or may be lesser.

Already we are missing Samsung HDDs.

Guess its a good time for Samsung to come in. Was contemplating buying a F3. But for RMA, sending it to USA, getting past customs, all these hassles were enough to put me off.

AFAIK, its not OEM, but rather non retail.

Does it affect external HDD's as well? Was thinking of getting Seagate GoFlex Desk 2 TB External HDD. I think I may end up getting the WD My Book Essential 2 TB. :(
