WD warranty is better for me as I live in a remote place. They have an option for sending the drives on a to-pay basis while I have to send the Seagate drives at my own cost. I recently RMAed one of my Raptors but unfortunately recieved the to-pay info only after I had shipped the drive. Just a few weeks earlier I had sent 3 drives and one external to Seagate at my own cost and didn't know WD takes care of the shipping too. Lesson learnt :P !

If anyone applies for WD RMA, wait for a day or two for their e-mail detailing the to-pay shipping options.

Btw, Seagate was quite prompt in the replacements :). No complaints there.
Seagate also has FREE Warranty Pick & Drop service......

I live at kharghar and they refused to do a pickup. said it's only for remote areas which are atleast 60km from a service center.

Buggers didn't inform me :@! Guess I'll have to mail them for my next RMA. Would you guys believe it, I've just filled up another RMA for 2 7200.12 500s and a 7200.11 500GB :@ :@ !! One of them is mine and the others are my friend's who'd given it to me for troubleshooting. Just confirmed they're dead !
That's 6 HDD failures I've seen the past 30 days :@! And none of the drives older than a couple of months 'cept the 7200.11 which was lying around for some time.

Edit: They don't mention free pickups on their site :http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=202271&NewLang=en.

Q. Who pays for shipping returns?

A. You must pay shipping charges for all shipments from you to Seagate. If your product is under warranty, Seagate will pay for shipment of the replacement product back to you. Other charges, duties, and customs are the responsibility of the customer.

Will call the numbers posted here and comfirm before I ship out the drives.

^ Damn- i can't even say you may need to get a better psu.

Hmmm... and there are some who say their WDs are faling them recently. :S

Only the Raptor and one 7200.11 failed on me :ohyeah:! The other Seagates were mostly being used by others. Since all of them are new I suspect the high failure rate must be due to the fact that all of them were bought online (hence shipping mishandling maybe?) Some had not even been plugged in and were kept lying around since I was very busy to install them (my lazy friends like qualified ppl to handle their stuff :bleh:). I think only two of the 7200.12s were online when they failed (SMART errors). Not sure though.

Otherwise the rate of failure is quite high. I'm ready to give Seagate the benifit of the doubt cos I know my pals :P!

Having an Accel frontline branch close to Gujarat why would they want us to send the drive all the way to the branch at Chennai? This's something I cant figure out! :S

Thanks. I just had a talk with the Seagate people on the numbers you've given and they have told me they'll arrange pick up or a to-pay courier in a couple of days. Saved me nice amount. Couriers are way too expensive here. Thanks again :hap2:!

Btw, the rep told me not to apply for RMA on the Seagate website to be eligible for pick up and to call them directly.
