Hi guys, deciding to gift my dad a nice pair of headphones. I have a max budget of 15k. I hope that is enough for this headphones. Is there any better choice than this ?

HD595 and the likes need amps to utlize their full potential...

Just get HD555 and be done with...He will be happy...

Thats not a problem. He is in the business of making amplifiers and speakers for a living. So he can always use an existing amplifier that he has or make a custom one for himself. :)

Sound budget ;)
If you can get from the US then the AKG 701 would be excellent, the HD 600 will also come within that budget. I suggest you getting either of these, or the much cheaper and slightly lower end Audio Technica ATH AD900 (open) or ATH A900 (open). The latter two will work well without an amp too (40 odd ohms) while the AKG and senny will need amplification.

Check reviews on all these cans too.

btw for high end cans Indian prices suck. That is if you can find em here of course :P

Thanks for the replies guys. I will go through whatever links you all have provided before deciding.

However buying from the U.S. is out since I have no means of procuring stuff from there. So whatever i buy will have to be local.

I phoned Gautam, the official distributer here in India and he told me he had stock of the HD 595 about 5 months ago. I hope he still has stock.

He was offering me a discount of 7% across his entire range. However since his prices were expensive I didn't bother then. However the HD595 price is quite decent (~14k with bill and 2 years warranty).

Thanks for the reviews, from the link Sangram provided, it seems there is a difference between the 595 and the 555. So i will go for that if nothing else is available.

Just a query. Do you guys buy your stuff from the U.S. when you'll go there or do you get with someone or ship it ?

But isnt the HD600 like more than double the cost of the HD 595 ? In the price list I got it was like almost 30k !

Well he listens to practically all kinds of music. But his preferences are Country, POP, Classics, Jazz and a little Rock. The Senn HD 580 is not available anymore.

Though I spoke with Lakozy in Chowpaty and they had a HD 580 which they use for testing. They were willing to let it go for about 9k. But since this is a gift I didnt want it.

as for procuring hings from US is not a big deal. I got my Sennheiser HD 485 shipped to India from ttvj.com and even after shipping it costed half the amount it retails for in India.

Just to give you an idea, HD485 sold for 7k in India and i got it shipped at my place from US at Rs.3400... now hows that??

Push for a larger discount, eventually when he gets stock he'll give you something like 15~20% off. I had ordered a sennheiser hd555 from him...
Also sennheiser has opened operations in India, in Delhi, not sure of the address or contacts. Pls do try to contact them for prices too.

^^If getting from the US (in lieu of how easy it is) get the HD600 which should with a good amp and cabling beat the HD580 or equal them. Hardware is the same I think, maybe a few tweaks though the HD600 is carbon fibre (at least the cups). Do check, I read up on this awhile back when deciding on my cans.

Hmm, you have a point. But the Senn 595 that I was thinking off costs arnd $310 with shipping which is very close to the price I will get here with warranty.

But yeah the cost of lower end headphones is definitely much cheaper. So when I want to buy for myself, I think ill buy from the US.

But did any of you face any hassles when bringing the stuff here ? like customs, broken goods ?
