sorry for the late reply...didnt see this...saw ur request for hd600/hd650 ni the IC...i think paying extra for the hd650 over hd600 isnt useful...infact most users prefer hd600 over hd650..no doubt technically hd650 is a better phone...

in the same price range is akg701...it is a great phone as well...ask the price for that n hd600, since both are border line to 15k..pick up the cheaper one

You have a point. Plus the HD 650 ive heard are very hard to drive and need an expensive amp. I actually wanted Senn only because they can service the headphone here in India.
But I feel shipping a headphone back wont be too much of a problem. So ill ask for the AKG 701 if the Senn HD600 isnt available.

The 650 is significantly better than 600 especially in bass department. When i bought mine, the difference was 25$ so I say 650 all the way. You would need an amp btw.

And a good one at that ! I doubt it would be very good with whatever amp my dad makes since he has the expertise to make very good professional amps but no experience building a headphone amp.

And I found out that even decent amps costs almost double of the HD650:(

^ er.. its not that big a deal i hear. U can build ur own amp for around 2~3k and a decently good one at that .. wait for the experts to chip in their comments :D

k...i have no firsthand experience on the hd650....briefly tried hd600....a frnd having that told its better than hd650...but i didnt ask whether he tried hd650

however my comment was based on the image i had whn looking for headphones on head fi....i want back to the site and re checked many forums

poll : bass akg k701 vs hd650

Best bass poll: HD650 or K701? - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

hd600 vs hd650

"so you actually prefer hd600 to hd650?

Lots of people do. The HD650 isn't a direct upgrade to the HD600. Although the HD650 is technically slightly more advanced, the headphones' sound signatures are different enough for people to sometimes prefer the more neutral and energetic sound of the 600s to the warmer, bassier and more refined 650s. They're both great phones, try both if you can and pick one.

Polls have shown that about 40% of voters like the HD600 as good as or better than the HD650"

580/600/650 sound better with lesser headamps

580/600/650 sound better with lesser headamps - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

AKG K 701's or Sennheiser HD 650's?
K701 vs HD650 - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

Keep in mind these aspects

-I love bass test cd's
-I want the closest thing to a theatre over my ears
-Only choosing between these two
-I play games and listen to music

newbie question: HD600 vs HD650: advice please? [/B](closest to truth??)

eventhough the poll say diiferent opinion, image i got from head-fi was that hd650 had better bass......but requires an amp of say $300

however since u have had both, maybe u can compare it better...esp. ur music taste might be closer to bf1983 than head-fiers.(considering we are indians)

Just a query, but how will a headphone like the HD 650 benifit from say a regular home amp with the headphones connected to the headphone socket and the the amp connected to the computer ?

connecting an amp to a soundcard depends on how gud the dac of the card is....otherwise using the amp may not sound well

technically home amp can do justice to higher impedence cans..it might be better than headphone amp....dont know about self made amps...check out headwise on diy amps....

plus it also depends on how well the amp sound synergies with the headphone sound...so it ll b a gamble there...however powering them shouldnt b an issue

er.. arent DAC and Amp 2 different fundas altogether? using a DAC without an amp wud still not drive high impedance cans, right? :ashamed:

what i meant was.....if u use onboard sound, u ll need a dac+amp.....many soundcards also require that...however there are cards which works gud without having an external dac(i.e use amp only)...

^ ah, the SOURCE! with a headphone such as the HD650, it better have a good source too. EMU0404 perhaps?

At 300 ohms it'd need much more than the EMU0404 soundcard I can assure you. Dedicated amp...around 300$ US is a good place to start

mm...the recomm one is emu0404 usb...which i believe is different from just emu0404...usually u can do without an amp...may not b so for hd650...its dac is pretty gud...but the price is high...
only music....chaintech av710 is a good card(and very cheap in US)
pro-music and gaming....esi juli@....it has a gud dac
music and pro-gaming...x-fi

Well the difference between the EMU 0404 USB and PCI is marginal. The only useful thing in the USB is that it has balanced outs. The 650 deserves a better source than the EMU... way way better. Also of what I heard, i'd rate the HD650 as being significantly better than the HD600. Yes its darker, yes its even more revealing but it just sounds so much more nicer than the HD600 which basically sounds quite similar to my old HD580. Infact, I'd have a hard time distinguishing between the 580 and 600 in an ABX.

The external DAC I use is significantly better than a 0404 when given the right SPDIF source and the headphone is bottlenecked even by that. I tried the headphone with a friend's Bluenote Stibbert CD player and it just completely blew me away. This was with a cheapo home built amp.

I'm currently building a better amp based on the Cavalli Kumisa 3 design with Raghunandan's help and hopefully it should be a lot lot better. IMHO, buying headphone amps for hundreds of dollars is a waste of money. If it turns out all well, I don't mind building a few extra ones for TE members.
