Sony Ericsson w610i

I aint done writing yet. Till I become a pro, I will be writing exlusively for techenclave. My second cellphone review:hap2:

I wanted to review my mom’s phone and get a better look at it. This 2nd phone which is came to be known as “the slim series†(infamous series). Since I am on a writing spree-I wanted to end the spree with another cellphone. With no delay or any long history just like in w880i-the Sony Ericsson w610i.

[BREAK=Specifications and package: lets see under the hood]

First, I am enjoying reviewing so many Sony products in a row. DAMN!!!!

Product Specifications:

512 MB Sony memory (m2 card)

Standard SE walkman earphones (Black)

“fastport†(apparently SE has given the SE universal charger/usb port a name) USB cable

Stereo Speakers

Charger

Standard manual and cd

Additional Features:

Java MIDP 2.0/ Walkman Software v 2.0/ FM Radio/ TrackID music recognition/ T9/ Image viewer/ Picture editor/ picture blogging/ organizer/ built-in hands free/ Voice memo/ Voice dial.

Phone type:

Quadband

Networks:

GSM 850, 900, 1800, 1900

GPRS, EDGE

Height: 102mm Width: 46mm Depth: 14mm

Weight: 95gram (some reviews mentioned it in approx)

Talktime: upto 7 hours. Standby: 360hour (some reviews say 350 hours)

Difference from w880i:

+ Radio

+ Stereo Speakers

+ Better camera button (if you haven’t noticed, w880i’s camera button is literally inside the phone)

+ Flash

+ Auto Focus

- 512 MB memory

- Auto Focus doesn’t live upto the 2mp SE user’s expectations (especially k750i lovers)

- I am surprised this phone sports a 2 Megapixel camera

Packaging:

DSC00756.jpg

The packaging was compact. Nothing fancy on the front (I forgot to the take the picture of the front box) but there are times I really wish they put some good packaging around the phone since India isn’t exactly an ace when it comes to handling goods during import and export.

DSC00758.jpg

The goodies are pretty much the same (including a stereo speakers-black. I gave it to my friend temporarily). There’s no point in highlighting about all these since they are pretty much the same. However it’s high time that walkman and cybershot series phones (and the stand alone) should have a matching carrying case with the package-something to strap on the hand with a walkman or cybershot logo.

[BREAK=The name: twisted logic]

The phone’s colour scheme is called silver satin and the second phone to release with w880i. I wanted to know how good was this phone so I traded with this phone for a day to know if it gels with my usage. Days go by and I found something to smile and something not to. However, there might be something which gains over the w880i-atleast that’s what I thought.

They call this phone-Satin black. Normally the colour name which is mention tells that the main colour is in the front, but it’s in the back-nice. Maybe they didn’t want to use it since playstation 2 already using the term “silver Satan….or is it satinâ€.

[BREAK=The front and the sides: Look into my eyes not my bootyXD]

[FONT=&quot]The face does say “my mom is a Sony ericssonâ€. The candybar styled phone is same among all the walkman phones. However, there are certain differences. Basmati sized silver button. In w880i it is has a semi circle touch on top of the number pad-but in case of the 610i-its flat. It is annoying but you get used to it in a painful manner (worse if you don’t use t9).

DSC00727.jpg

[/FONT] It’s the part above the number pads which annoyed me. This phone is not a slim phone so I can’t give it an excuse about the buttons. It reminds me of those ridiculous “fashion phones†some companies make. They should have kept a space next to the walkman and the shortcut button, chances of pressing could have been reduced. Don’t even plan to play any game on it….trust me w880i was better off.

I would have loved to see the joystick type (an improved one…better then k750 and w700i) on the w series. Atleast they should but the buttons on the same level with the metallic button rather then making it look like a walkman style miniature fountain from bird’s eye view. The button leaves a scar on the scores.

The sides:

DSC00745.jpg

The sides didn’t disappoint me, infact this was the part I began to wonder how on earth this became a walkman phone, it looks like a hybrid. Look at the picture above this and on the right you see the camera’s firm button proudly sticking out. I really loved it. Atleast you didn’t need a stylus or something to poke it in to take pictures.

DSC00730.jpg

The right hand side sports a silver walkman in between and the magnifier/volume control.

DSC00744.jpg

The control was ample. But still, it’s annoying. The one on the w880i, though tiny, it was standing out so you can push it up and down. This one, though it’s bigger and comfy, it makes the plastic sound. When I saw these new phones, how I wished they implement the jog dial feature on most of the SE phones. Back in the original Sony days, using jog dial was great and it should be for walkman phones. I think Sony started the jog dial in the old days and that’s why I loved the j7 and the z5. Please sony-start the reign of jog dials on your phones.

DSC00732.jpg

the other side, it sports a play/stop button, and m2 slot and the fast port. Reviewers criticized the fast port on the side, but I didn’t understand why because no1 gave any explanation, how it can be a con?

DSC00733.jpg

The m2 cover is very strong, stronger then the w880i. But by the looks of the size of the phone, I am surprised that it’s using the m2, and why not the pro stick versions. The phone isn’t THAT thin.

[BREAK=The top: What are you looking at, you stupid dog!!!]

DSC00740.jpg

Power button- no surprises. Infrared- surprised. Why? Infrared is gone, could have been scaled out to make the phone thinner. How many people in the world still use infrared? I use it….you use it….in our remote control. But this cannot control tv-maybe some “hack†program but not sure if there are such programs for SE. So it’s a waste of blob there.

Watch my back: the Camera and other sad stories:

This has a 2 mega pixel camera. Auto focus and flash. When these phones were released, w880i was a staggering 21k and this phone used to cost 16k at Alfa-BACK IN THE OLD DAYS. I was confused how come w880i was more expensive then this, I thought SE was conscious about pricing but I was confused about it.

DSC00736.jpg

Flash, memory and a tiny bubble type mirror-reminded me of the old and great k750i days. I wanted to see how powerful the flash is. No I do not doubt the flashy thingy (MIB mode); I want to know if the SE makers are behaving in the camera. Though this is a walkman phone, they taken a chance to squeeze in k750i’s ability-except macro.

DSC00753.jpg

The flash shines proudly (for a cellphone) now for a short cam test.

DSC00754.jpg

This is an indoor picture under natural low-light. No surprises there. I still could see the wrinkles on the mattress. I know it’s lazy of me to take pictures while lying down the bed-this is what happens when your 21 and don’t have a girlfriend (Hahahahahahahahahahaha…no I am serious). So I activated

DSC00755.jpg

Wow…it’s great. Excellent is the word- I can see the details to a good extent, I need to clean my AC vents. Yeeeks!!!!

The camera is clear. You can see the crack, the dust, the wear and tear. Enough for a below-basic user (now-a-days the definition of average changed significantly). Even without the macro mode on this phone, the camera is a great add-on and a great quality!!

[BREAK=The face and the voice: Does it sound as well as it looks?]

DSC00747.jpg

The screen is clear. By the way, you don’t see the pixels on the phone. My Sony w70 camera seems to be able to extract that detail even on 880i but you don’t see that.

Two things you will always love about SE phones no matter what-great dedication to screens and camera. The more models come out in the same budget, the better the screen quality and clarity gets. I seen a new k750i being proudly shown off from a kid and compared it with this, and you literally see “evolutionâ€. Seeing these things on a cell is nice, it gives me a good feeling!!!!

But what about the sound????

What I done is that I have tested the speakers against the atp3….yeah right I wish. But I compared with w880i again-my lab rat.

DSC00751.jpg

I was playing the song-the summer of 69…and both the phones sounded as if I am playing on a nokia 6600. Disappointed? Yes-but on w610i. W880i has just one small tiny scratch for the sound. But the SE w610i has multiple holes. It doesn’t live upto the expectations. The stereo speakers which is bundled with it is just enough to hear music in my bathroom, if I don’t flush

[BREAK=Conclusions: “defeated via knockoutâ€]

2.5/5

Buttons are a disappointment. Very bad walkman interface controls in the front. Sony made a redundant move by putting an infrared on top. Good camera, good flash, good auto focus-but it’s a walkman phone…what are you doing on a walkman phone? M2 on this phone? It’s as silly as seeing a size 46 pants worn by Paris Hilton or seeing Mallika sherawat actually wearing “REAL†clothes. I am done; this phone looks as if it’s made less than 5 minutes with k750i’s spare parts and lego’s “do it yourself†kit. But if this phone was under the wing of cybershot, it will receive 3.5 out of 5 hands down. Another disappointment is the onboard speakers. Its way bigger then w880i but it sounds like a w880i-no louder or clearer then that. This phone must be costing a lot less right now. It’s a good phone, but I don’t like to see a quality of a good camera phone on a walkman phone, why the heck did they further branded their phones if this was the case?

another thing bout some of these new SE phones: those really thin slit like keys!!!!!! try writing a couple of sms n u ll start cursing :P used my bros k550 for 2 sms messages and i was done with that model ;)

Eventually you get used to it. So i didnt count that as a con. But the walkman shortcut keys is so frustrating, even i got used to it, it didnt ease my frustration. If you are irate after getting used to it, then its bad
