ok, i did read the PC buying guide thread, but anyway need your opinion on a PC setup-everthing inside the cabby + speakers , for a budget of 25k. usage is general purpose use for the whole family(net, music, movies, autoCAD,casual gaming).

here's my planned config:
Intel Core2Duo E4300
Intel DG965 motherboard
Transcend 2GB DDR2 533Mhz RAM
Lite-on 20X DVD writer
Seagate 250GB HDD
VIP 400W PSU + some cabby
Altec Lansing ATP3

need approximate prices and your suggestions for any changes.
Thanks in advance!

no OCing, no hardcore gaming. just an average PC for the whole family to use.
and oh, the config should be OK enough to last for next 5 years. the PC currently in use has a P4 1.6Ghz, so you get the picture.

No guarantees can ever be made regarding that

and you'll need to add a GPU on that later onwards when HD stuff becomes the norm....for decoding Hi Res movies easily

Other then that its a good config....spend some more on the PSU though if you can and get a Cooler Master eXtreme 380 for 1700 or so....

Intel Core2Duo E4300 : 4850

Intel DG965 motherboard : 5500

Transcend 2GB DDR2 533Mhz RAM : 3500

Lite-on 20X DVD writer : 2000

Seagate 250GB HDD : 2900

VIP 400W PSU + some cabby : depends, a cabbuie comes for 1.2k or so, rest spend on a good psu, trust me its way more important then the computer sellers make it out to be

Altec Lansing ATP3 : 2600

enjoy

thanks for the reply.
that totals to around 22k without the PSU.
so i can spend the rest 3k on a PSU and maybe could try and squeeze in the Core2Duo E6320 in the total deal.

decent config but go for a zebronics antibiotic + cooler master extreme 400W i think both shud come for around 6k

Youll need a decent graphics card, for even Casual Gaming.

Get a 8500GT or a 8400GT when it launches. Something is better than nothing.

will try and get one then, i can buy the speakers later and 1GB RAM should be enough for now.
read somewhere about there being a price drop from Intel on 22nd July. is this true? i am willing to wait till then.

just got a quote from the local dealer:
Intel Core2Duo E4300-Rs.4,950
E6320-Rs.7,650
Intel DG965RY motherboard-Rs.5,250
Transcend 2*1GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM-Rs.1,800 each
Lite-on 20X DVD writer-Rs.1,500
Seagate SATA HDD 320GB-Rs.3,850
160GB-Rs.2,300
VIP PSU 500W-Rs.2,700
400W-Rs.1,350
Altec Lansing ATP3-Rs.2,550
have a few questions now:
1. are the prices ok? is there any price drop expected from Intel on July22nd?
2. what is the significant difference between the E4300 and E6320? do i need to get the E6320?
3. is there any alternative to the 965 mobo?
4. do i really need 2GB RAM now or is 1GB ok?
5. will a 400W PSU suffice if i plan to add an entry-level gfx card later or should i go for a 500W one?

1. are the prices ok? is there any price drop expected from Intel on July22nd?

Prices are a little on the higher side (100 bux or so) for a few products, after price drop get ready to wait 2 weeks for them to get here...

2. what is the significant difference between the E4300 and E6320? do i need to get the E6320?

Stick with the E4300

3. is there any alternative to the 965 mobo?

With onboard graphics, NO

4. do i really need 2GB RAM now or is 1GB ok?

If your budget permits 2 Gig go for it, its the 512MB of 2003

5. will a 400W PSU suffice if i plan to add an entry-level gfx card later or should i go for a 500W one?

Get a Cooler Master 380W for 1700 minimum, nothing below that, ditch that VIP PSU,slightly better would be a Powersafe 500W for 2.5k but kind of a overkill for ur needs

thanks for the reply. here's the final rig i have decided on. will order it tomorrow:
Intel Core2Duo E4300-Rs.4,950
Intel DG965RY motherboard-Rs.5,250
Transcend 2*1GB DDR2 667Mhz RAM-Rs.3,600
Lite-on 20X DVD writer-Rs.1,500
Seagate SATA HDD 320GB-Rs.3,850
VIP 400W-Rs.1,350; will try and get a Cooler Master
Altec Lansing ATP3-Rs.2,550
some decent cabinet-Rs.1,500
TOTAL = Rs. 24,550.

hope to get some discount on the complete deal!
