Shocking 5G mobile data consumption on Jio.

So I got a new Jio 5G SIM today and it was activated at around 4:10PM. I checked my net speed three times on Speedtest. I didn't do anything else. I didn't update anything. And by around 5:30PM to my shock I got the "50% data used" message. I checked my balance and it was already at only 120MB/1.5GB (daily).
How on earth is this possible?? I didn't even get to use it properly yet.

W T F happened.

F'n ridiculous.
Not out of the norm for 5G speeds.

You can burn though your plan in less than a minute.
Seriously? How the hell do people even use this shi-! I was really looking forward to 5G so I got a new SIM but damn seems like ₹400 is finished for nothing.

Why so much difference between 4G and 5G in data consumption? I honestly thought that 5G would be 4G but faster. I cannot correlate how just being faster would mean more data consumption . I thought that it has to be a mistake..

When running a speed test on a faster connection, more data is naturally used to measure your maximum speed within a short period. So, it's no surprise that if you're getting around 100 Mbps, a single speed test can consume between 75 MB and 150 MB. The higher the speed, the more data the test will use each time.

Recharge with an additional 51 INR (True Unlimited Upgrade section in the Jio app) on your number and get that 1.5GB/day 299 INR plan converted to the base 5G Unlimited 349 INR plan.

Also, why were you charged 400 INR for the SIM? A new SIM should only cost the plan you are recharging, which is 299 INR. At least, that's what I paid when I got a new Jio 5G SIM.

same thing happened to me 1st time .. be very careful when using speedtest .. speedtest downloads 1GB files for testing .. 3 times speedtest means nearly 3GB gone

It resets at the end of the day, so it is not as if you have blown your monthly plan. However, apart from Speedtest which uses a large data set and video streaming, don't see the need for large amount of data.

Recharge with an additional 51 INR (True Unlimited Upgrade section in the Jio app) on your number and get that 1.5GB/day 299 INR plan converted to the base 5G Unlimited 349 INR plan.

I ported a family member's SIM this month and the Jio guy was pulling the same thing with me, asking for 399 to activate the current IPL offer. I told him that I am not porting if anything extra is to be paid over the plan amount, and he then quietly settled on 299.

New SIM costs ₹100.
Plan costs ₹299.
So it's like this, I actually wanted to get the ₹899 plan which gives 2GB/day+20GB but I was told that first time recharge can only be the ₹299 something and that I can change it only after the current month expires.
So I want to ask, will I be able to avail the offer which you said if I do that additional recharge? Or will it still not qualify like I got told by the outlet?

same thing happened to me 1st time .. be very careful when using speedtest .. speedtest downloads 1GB files for testing .. 3 times speedtest means nearly 3GB gone
Holy shi-! Today I learned! I had no idea.
Thanks everyone for the insight regarding Speedtest. My problem really is because of Speedtest then.

Go for unlimited 5g plans after expiry of plan. For jio 2gb/day qualifies for unlimited 5g unless they change it. Before 1.5gb/day was unlimited. Check for unlimited data while recharging
Like many have said , the 2GB/day plan gets you unlimited 5G.
Any data usage on 4G with the 5G unlimited eligible plans will still count against your daily data quota.
Can you be more specific about the plan and clarify this "unlimited" thing?
How exactly is it "unlimited" if it has a FUP of 2GB/day? Or did I misunderstand something?

so long your jio sim runs on 5g network, that is so long you see 5g/5g+ in your phone, you will have unlimited internet!
(basically per day restrictions are on 4g related networks the moment it shifts to 4g from 5g or you see 4g/lte/lte+ in your phone you are using your daily quota, yes 5g doesnt deplete you daily quota on jio)
New SIM costs ₹100.
this might out of scope of this thread but i am curious what?? why does sim card costs 100rs? arent they free? (or are they porting related charges, some charge some dont)

The Speedtest results while I'm at it.
The 298mbps and 400mbps were while I was within 500m near the tower.
The slower 40mbps is near the village where I live. Such stark difference in the speed yeah? I was so hyped about 5G but if the distance really affects the speed that heavily then ugh! And I'm now too paranoid to do another Speedtest run aha!

Oh now I understand. Thanks. Yes I'm seeing 5G++ on my phone. But I don't think 1.5GB/day is unlimited anymore. Just my luck.

Yes they are free. But they are imposing it as extra charges. Nothing unusual where I live. Different environment than elsewhere. Let's just say it's complicated.
