Can we complain somewhere if CCD people say that they cannot provide tap water and force us to pay for their branded water?

I thought there was a consumer court ruling that if someone asks for water, restaurants/cafes are bound to serve tap water for free.

EDIT: Maybe I heard it on the radio. Sometime back there were some ads on Radio Mirchi by West Bengal Consumer Grievance Redress Society(or something like that) which mentioned this.

I will show this to the local shop guy who charges 1 rupee more in milk packets and 2 rupees more on cold drinks as cooling charge.

You are right. I have read this about it. Some guy from Hyderabad filed a complaint in Consumer Court. Let me google and find more

MRP means MRP, no extras. if you report him to the dairy he could be in trouble.
I have reported it once, nothing happened and no action was taken. Later I moved to a different locality and I had to stop pursuing it.

do note that these cold drink walas who charge 5rs, 7rs extra for cooling is also illegal.

Also one more thing, if you buy a bisleri water for more than MRP (say 15INR) and if you let them serve you it then they can charge you wahetver in the name of service.

Reported it to whom ?

Check the date on the bottles, coke is good for 2.5 months from date of manufacture. I avoid these guys and buy from stores instead. I've not faced these 'cooling charges', my issue is because they don't keep the drinks cooled all the time, quality may be iffy.

This implies a restaurant license, ask to see it ? otherwise they can't charge you what they want.

I've contested this in a few places and some times they have relented other times they refuse. Find another shop.

IIRC, the cooling charges were allowed by a ruling once.
I am not sure if that order was rescinded or not. Would like some info on this one.

I remember stopping as Behror (RTDC owned and maintained retreat while on your way to Jaipur, Rajasthan). I was already in a bad mood due to potholed roads and when they charged me extra on a regular bottle of Softdrink, i blasted the cashier guy. As usual, like a Sarkaari job wala, he gave me utter idiotic reasons.
A few days later, while on my return trip i again took a break at the same place and ordered the same drink. This time i was served in a paper cup. I knew that some kinda ruling had been passed where the restaurants could charge randomly if not served in a bottle (which was again very ridiculous!)

Are both these rulings still in place?

A restaurant if they have a license can charge whatever they want. It's not unusual to see soft drinks go for twice the amount on the bottle. Its the small shops or stores doing that which isn't on the level.

^ So as long as it is a restaurant (liscenced one), it can charge anything for bottled water/softdrinks/any commodity?
If they 'serve' the water to you. If they just give you a packed water bottle, then they cannot.

It's like water bottle cost is 15 INR. but pouring that in a glass and serving you costs 150.

diary union in the nearest district. they were like kya saab why bother for 1 Re. At that time I did not about consumer court and all, so I couldn't do much.

I did not know about license part :-/

anyways I have always failed to not let them charge me for water. and then who wants food with a spit.

That's what i would have done too. These guys have franchises and you would think some action would have been forthcoming :(

I can only imagine what others have to put up with if this is the attitude from the union.

heh 1 rupee x number of customers for the day x many days. it adds up.

Where i am milk is sold out by 10am, either get it before then or do without it. No cooling charge. Maybe its open much later for you.

This new place I moved to is good. Guy delivers milk packets (Nandini to be precise) at 7am sharp. He charges no extra than MRP or cooling charges or delivery charges. Just have to pay money upfront for one month. God bless this guy.

Only encountered these extra charges when traveling by bus at nearly all bus stations. Never encountered at any shop in my city. In Delhi too, only paid extra a couple of times when I go out for late night parathas. The guy who runs the joint has to pay to the policewallas to keep his joint running throughout the night so I don't mind paying 5 bucks extra to get a bottle of chilled coke at 3 in the night. Apart from that I would never pay if a shopkeeper would ask and fortunately such a scenario hasn't occured.

Have to pay extra 2 INR for milk after 10. Before 10 no extra charges.

Cold drinks they charge extra - but since we buy from malls only and that too rarely, no issues.

Have observed the restros located mainly on the highways sell Maaza for 5-7 Rs premium over MRP often. Reason being same BS; cooling charge. Sigh! only if consumer laws in this country could have been better :-/

I just finished traveling on a train from Delhi to Bangalore. I was surprised to see all the vendors charging as per MRP printed on the products. But I got a big doubt when I bought a 400ml bottle of MinuteMaid. The printed price was Rs 50. I felt it was little overpriced. Since we do not buy soft drinks, I was not aware of the actual price. I came back and got a chance to check the price of the same bottle in supermarket. MRP Rs 22!!! Looks like a new nationwide scam going on in the railways :(
Unfortunately, didnt preserve the bottle...so cant complain to anyone.

Regards,
Mohit
