Hi all,

A friend of mine is going to US (Minneapolis) for about 20 days. He plans to purchase electronics stuffs as its very cheap there.

Here are few things which are in list.

Dell Studio 14 / Inspiron 14z (Preferred Dell because US warranty can be transferred to India, No plans for Studio 15 as it has no DVD Drive)

Apple 80/120/160GB iPod Classic + FM Attachment with remote
Apple 3G 8GB/16GB iPhones
Camera - Nikon/Canon - Canon SX120IS (No to DSLRs)
HDMI/Toslink Cables
Wrist watches
4/8 GB MMC Cards

NO plans at all for Graphics card, Motherboards, CPUs, Fans, Heatsinks, LCD & Home theaters etc.

Pls answer few of the questions below...

Best place to pick up Laptops in USA (Walk in stores/Online order)
Best place to pick up iPods/iPhones (Refurbished/Used) - Which version of firmware to take so it can be jail broken.
How much amount of electronics will customs allow in India (I guess its 25000 INR, How do you show value of used item as there will be no bill)

Please do suggest other items which can be picked up from USA.. Give your tips.
 
Buy everything online. They'll have much better deals and no sales tax (which can be 6% to 10% depending on the state)

Dell Laptop - dell.com

Apple Stuff - If it's refurbished you want, get it directly from the Apple store online. You'll know that it will still have 1 year warranty. Refurbished iPod - Apple Store (U.S.)

HDMI/toslink cables - monoprice.com

Camera + Watch + Memory Card - amazon.com, tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, etc. Find the place with the lowest price and no shipping.

All these places will also provide the bill, so no worry.
 
I've heard of Fry's chain of electronics shops in the USA.. But don't know how good or bad they are... Never been to the US :(
 
Fry's will have the best deals amongst all the brick and mortar outlets. Online is the way to go. I am out looking for a 2TB external HDD and I get the following prices -

WD @ Best Buy - $229

Seagate @ Best Buy - $219

WD @ Fry's - $199

Seagate @ Fry's - $195

Now check out the deals I am getting online -

WD @ Amazon - $188

Seagate @ ebay - $183

This is just a small example. If you are seriously out to shop, then search for more deals online.

Wah!! is the warranty transferable part true... can anyone else confirm this?

Oh can you please elaborate how it works?
Lets assume A who lives in US of A buys a laptop for B who lives in India.

The initial warranty will be under A's name and address right?
What is the procedure to transfer this warranty to B's name and address in India ?

Tell Mr A to take laptop from US & give USA address. Once product is shipped to India.

Call customer care & tell them change of address. Dell also has a link in which you can fill up the details for Change of address.

How about Apple 3G 8GB/16GB iPhones - Which version of firmware to take so it can be jail broken ?

Can a person carry 2-3 phones (open, no box) with them ?
 
You can pass of the One laptop, ipod as personal use items. For phones, if you can risk keeping it in check in baggage then you are sorted. Else keep two in pockets as personal use phones. Ensure that maximum electronics are passed of as personal use ones to avoid any sort of custom duty.

I was questioned by the customs at Mumbai airport for carrying two laptops (one official and one personal) and they said only one is allowed. I protested and said i know that we can have two (as in my case). They said Ok :)

Do apple store sell Used iphones ?

I heard they have refurb, can anyone confirm, will that be with contract or just phone ?
 
The first reply to the thread (which was by me :P) links to the part of the apple site which sell refurbished stuff.

They don't seem to have any iphones at the moment though. THey keep updating that section frequently. So look later.
