Shutdown vs standby vs hibernate

I use sleep or hibernate depending on the time that I'd be away from the computer.

PS:- AFAIK in 7 and vista, Sleep and hibernate are two different options, and thus not the same as indicated in the poll

hibernate if you are low on ram, shutdown incase of memory above 2GB just because generally it takes more time to copy that much memory to drive than shutting down.

or unless you have to perform a specific task everytime you boot machine then hibernate can save considerable amount of time and efforts.

Sleep (in vista/7) is a hybrid between standby and hibernate. It kind of replaces hibernate
shutdown incase of memory above 2GB just because

maybe, but isn't the startup is a lot faster in hibernate , since there no startup applications/services.

I always keep my office lappy on suspend. Havent rebooted since a month, no issues. Running XP SP3

I always recommend shutdown at night whenever there is no work in progress..
I believe that the 2 watts which is used while hibernating can also be saved looking at the larger picture..Imagine each of us saving 2 watts per day for one year..the amount is just huge..

Nowadays windows boot a lot faster. win7 boots very fast..max 30 seconds..so there shouldnt much delay probs during boot too..
So, please shutdown ur pc at night unless there is any work in progress..
And for those of you who are too lazy to shutdown ur systems thereby leaving them locked or running unncessarily at night :no::no:

I am not trying to preach anything here..just my 2 cents..

^^^You mean standby? Hibernation doesnt consume any resources as the machine is simply turned off!
